Why SKS?

I've been looking at some SKS's and I was just wondering about some of the general information about them.

They look pretty cool, and from what I've gathered, they sound okay.

I just want other people's takes on it. ^_^

I have one. They are rugged and reliable but not all that accurate. Mine lives in the hold of my boat where, given an oiling now and then, it ought to be ready if I need it.

The SKS has largely replaced the 30-30 as the poor man's deer rifle here in the Appalachians.

Excellent value for the money! You are getting a rugged military rifle of moderate power and reasonable accuracy for the price of a cheaper .22 rifle!
There are enough different variations to please the collectors, and it's a great plinker for us that like to shoot. Ammo is cheaper than the bigger rifles, and it doesn't beat the shooter up.
And it looks just evil enough to frighten the rabid Antis - always a GOOD thing . . .

Get one - you'll like it!

Ultra reliable, relatively accurate out to 75-100yards, gives a pleasant shove to the shoulder when shot, cheap to shoot, looks great.

i love my sks, there great rifles, they will take a crap ton of abuse, there fun to shoot..... i have never had a single problem of any kind with my sks. imho the sks is as good as it gets!

I think the SKS is one of the best semi auto medium power rifles out there. It gives accuracy better than my mini 14 ever did for a lot less money. Plus, it is a better short to medium range deer rifle. The rifles are just plain fun to mess around with. If you want to customize it can be done easily and inexpensively with out a lot of tools. Just pick up one and shoot a couple hundred rounds through it. You will be hooked. Plus, the way the prices are going if you pick one up you can play with it for a couple years and sell it for what you paid or more! SKSes will never shoot with an AR. But you can buy THREE SKSes for what an AR goes for.

SKS's are wonderful. I love it. I have a Russian. I bubba'd it up by putting a folding stock on it and a tapco 20 round mag, but it keeps my Russian wood looking nice I like to take it out and shoot it. It's right along with my AK if shtf. I sold my norinco years ago and regretted it. I saw my russian setting in a gun shop with $253 tag on it and it sat there forever. I was lucky it was still there. I'd never trade it for anything.

1)the sks is a very reliable gun i mean the action but not as good as Kalashnikov action (ak) the sks action i belived (correct me if im wrong) inspired Kalashnikov action so the sks is 2nd best in the action area

2)it is very customizable but as i found out when i started to replace the gas tube with a tapco one and i replaced the gas piston and operating rod and a tapco replacement detach mag i started to have problems with ejecting, jaming, and the gas tube would even pop off after 1-3 shots!! (this one was a tricky fix) so do be carefull when replacin parts

3) cheap ammo and many different types of rounds to choose from for huntin and plinking

4) ok acurracy but is far from perfect at the least expect a 5-6 inch patern at 100 yards

5) its a nice ruggid gun that will last a long time

i have a yugo that i got for $200 a a dunhams sports store

Firebird I have about the same story only I did not own one previously. I was a MOA snob and thought them trash. That is until I bought one and shot it! My first was a Yugo. My second was a Russian that Paper turned me on to at a local shop. They had two of them and I bought one Russian and Paper bought the other. I have shot both of them. Love them both and can not believe I waited this long to get one. These are range guns. I may hunt with the Yugo some but the Russian is only a range gun. I love them!!!!

you can find yugo's cheap, they're not exactly my thing, but they're affordable.

I loved my sks, it shot man sized groups at 600m at the range and shot many a feral here on the farm until some idiot shot up a cafe and they took it off me.

Great rifle! And contrary to some, I do suggest customizing if it makes the rifle more comfortable for you. However you do want to be careful with it as some aftermarket parts are crap. If you can, buy a Norinco or a Russian. They're lighter than the Yugoslavian and have chrome lined barrels for the heavy shooter.
