How many carry a back up ?

I carry a 9mm or .38 as primary/with a NAA 22 magnum mini revolver as my back up.
The small size makes it extremely concealable.
It can be palmed while walking in questionable areas.
Parking lots, poorly lit streets etc. , should you find yourself in that kind of situation.
It will fit nicely in the small (coin pocket) within the pocket of most jeans.
The birds beak handle will be exposed, so I wear a loose fitting shirt to cover the handle.
I tried an ankle holster, but could not get used to it.
After purchasing the mini , I was amazed to find out how many are carried as a convenient close quarters emergency back up.
I showed it to my father-in-law, a retired asst. Police chief. Who is now a private investigator.
He smiled and showed me the same little revolver, tucked in his jacket pocket.
At the beach or swimming pool, it can come in handy while only partially dressed.
I mention it here because I think it is a worth while consideration.
As an emergency type back up.
Naturally it would not be my choice for a primary weapon, but it could come in handy.
My gun dealer told me he sells many of them.
He said " you would be surprised how many people here in town carry those little things".
I tried to get my wife to carry one in her handbag, she refused.
She is a visiting home health nurse and goes into real bad area's.
But she will not listen to me.
I might have to take out a big insurance policy on her LOL.Just kidding,Do not qoute me LOL
She goes into trailers and run down apartments,
She actually has had to step over people, sleeping on the floor to get to her patient!
While drug dealers are hanging around her car outside.
She is one brave lady, I wish I could convince her to carry something.

I just saw that revolver recently at a gun show, and then the guy who taught the CWP class has one. I really like it, and would consider it myself. Its not expensive, and I like that I can keep it in my pocket. I am definitely considering getting one. I

I would not use it as my main carry, but definitely a back up!!

The NAA mini revolver (derringer) is well made and inexpensive.
And the fact that it holds five .22 magnum rounds is a big plus for a tiny gun.
Sometimes if I am in a hurry, I just grab that gun and shove it in my pocket.
If I am just running to the store, it is better than having nothing on me.
Again, if I know I will be out all day in shopping malls and parking lots etc.
I will carry my 9mm, and take the derringer along for a backup.
I live in SC too. Near Mrytle beach and we do have crime here, just as everywhere.
A while back a woman was abducted from the Walmart parking lot here.
Her body has never been found.
She had just taken the CCW course here and had not purchased a gun yet.
She might have had a chance with that little gun tucked away. When they found her car, it was evident she had been with one of them in the back seat. probably raped.
They caught the guys that abducted her, they admitted killing her,or one did.
They are suspected in the abduction of a college student in Virginia as well. They have been charged with abduction and murder of the SC woman, and are on death row.
Walmart video showed the men shoving her in the back seat. Very tragic sad story.
If she whipped out a gun and started shooting, who knows she might have survived the attack. Or at least caused enough racket that people might have seen what was taking place.
Woman especially need to protect themselves, and criminals would not expect a woman to be armed, which would work in her favor in the element of surprise. Just my opinion ~JJ~

Don't carry a backup, but have separate pistols for CCW and car gun.

I've hear mixed advice on carry in a purse.

The big question is, what gets stolen from women quite often?

Imagine the wife grappling with a big guy over her purse as she tries to get to her weapon.

I, myself, am a semi-automatic person; I know that revolvers have its pros; I started my world of guns with a semi automatic; my mother in law has a derringer and its perfect for her weaker hands, she says; I do not, and will not, carry my gun in my purse; I have a "in the pants" holster; I am now currently looking for another semi automatic and will either choose another .380 or even a 9mm, but I want it to be a compact gun...I have seen the keltec .380's and I don't think I will like them. Currently, I carry the only .380 that I own...no back ups.

Mrs S if your interested in a 380 Ruger has came out with a very concealable 380 they named the LCR.
To see it go to Rugers web site. They look like the KelTec but more refined.
I'm probably going to buy one soon and carry it on me and leave the pistol I'm useing now stashed in my ride or leave it on my nightstand.

Since you are in the market, I think you ought to have a look at these. It's on my wish list.

Springfield Armory

Springfield XD sub compact in 9mm or .40 S&W. About $550.00 here, with extra mag, kydex mag pouch, kydex holster.

Mitch..I looked at the springfield xd compact; 9mm looks okay; I have shot off my husband's .40 and although I controlled the gun, it had a bit of recoil, compared to my .380; again, being new to handguns, I know nothing about springfiled armory; the kind of gun I am looking for would be along the lines of the bersa thunder or another FEG, but I prefer it to be smaller like the ruger LCP or the xd compact; I love my FEG but want to retire it before something irreplacable happens and won't be able to get parts for it.

Do you have the SMC-380?

If so, that is my carry weapon right now. Looks and feels like a Walther PPK.

If so, I had a nasty, nasty problem with mine. It should not be dry fired! damages the firing pin hole and caused my pin to stick out enough to have an A.D.!!

it's an easy fix, though. I got on it right after I put on the new underwear.

I agree!!! or how about just leaving it somewhere, like a shopping cart, a dressing room....etc etc...thats why I won't ever carry in my purse. I am too much of a scatter brain..I need it to to be on my person..

A quick entry "fanny pack" is a good alternative to a purse. It is secured around the waist and is indiscrete as a "holster". It doesnt elimante the "forgetting you set it down" aspect but it cannot be snatched off the shoulder etc like a purse. They accomodate men or women. Something to consider perhaps.

I have a Iver Johson TP-22 that is a nice small sized back up. It's a good point and shoot gun that I always take with me.
I had bought my Remington model 51 .380 for a carry gun then made it a back up for a short time before retiring it.
I want to see about getting one of the FEG PA-63 that I have seen advertised lately. It looks to be similar in size to the Remington 51. That size would be good as a primary carry or back up gun.

I pocket carry a Taurus 905 9mm moonclipped snubnose revo. Sometimes I'll carry a Beretta Tomcat .32 in an OWB belt hoster, crossdaw, as a bug, especially if I'm going to be doing a lot of in town driving (it's a bit difficult getting the pocket pistol out with a seat belt on). I practice drawing with them often, and shoot them each every couple of weeks. Sometimes, if I'm going to be doing something in a more dangerous part of town, I'll carry my Smith 4566 IWB with nine Gold Dot .45acp's, then the Taurus is my bug and the Beretta is my bug bug.

DrBoomBoom, how do you like the Taurus 905? I have often wondered about a 9mm in a revolver, neat idea. You have a good idea as stated above. Thanks, I like the 9mm auto and .45ACP auto for a main gun.

I carry a .45 G.A.P. in my truck at all times, as well as a S&W .40 Compact on my person.

Next to my bed 24/7 is a loaded double-barrel break action shotgun (a "coachgun," as they're called).
