While I can produce very good groups at 50 yards with my M597 in .22LR, the group goes to hell beyond ~80 yards. It's not that the target is a whole lot farther away, it's just that the ammo starts acting weird at about that point. I can get a 0.75" group with ease at 50 yards, but 100 yard shots turn out something like a 4-5 inch group...it's really bizarre, but definitely a result of the ballistics of the light weight .22LR projectile.

With my new CZ 22lr i can easy hit gophers at 100yards. Clean kills. Lucky shots can be out to about 150 yards. Id say 100 yards is the safe maximum range. As said before wind starts playing a large role.

I believe 75 yards is considered the .22's useful range by most, anything over 100 is a stunt. As mentioned, it will kill varmints out far past that, but estimating range and bullet drop would take a Svengali.

Both Sam and Brad have said what i would have.Anything over 75 metres with a rimfire isnt fair on the game.I know its possible to shoot and kill critters past it and i have been guilty of it when a bit younger.17HMR would be my choice in rimfire and if i had to go with a centrefire i would use my 222 or 22/250.

Hey Wonhunglo, Yeah, lots of people around here still use the Hornet.....It is the Violators weapon of choice. A neighbor had a 2000 lb bull killed, shot through the eye. The Hornet was suspected. They never got the A.H. I considered the Hornet and .223 when I got the .22-250. For what I do, it does it cleaner, farther and faster.

A .22Hornet is neither a .223rem,nor a .22-250rem.It is a .22Hornet that is relatively quiet and can be depended on to take up to coyote at up to 150yds with 35or 40gr vmax, and will take woodchucks at 200yds.Abuot 1/2 what the .223 will do and no place close to a .22-250.I still like the hornet because I can hunt close to houses without getting turned in,and it makes me use more hunting skills. sam.

I also have seen knowlegable people that have hunted successfully for over 30 years, people I consider friends, not really know the real distance of 100 yards. Unless you get out a tape measure or range finder I think most would be very surprised, and over estimate the actual range.

I ain't saying that anyone that's already posted above did that...save you breath no need to call me a loser. I already tell myself that in the mirror every morning...makes the day go a whole lot easier.
