cleaning the bolt

is there any way to get the firing pin out of the bolt. when i got it it was abviously packed in super grease which i got out the first week. but it seems that whenever i push the pin back and forth you can hear the gunk inside it. i guess i could soak it in some clp or something but i would feel better if i could get it out and clean it thoroughly.

Soak it in mineral spirits. Or Gun scrubber/brake/carb cleaner will work as well. Just be careful with that stuff.

All I did was dissasemble the bolt then put it in a pot and ran very hot water on it. It melted the cosmo right off, kinda stir it around to. Did this with the trigger assembly also. hope this helps.

I agree w/Tex, make sure you can shake the bolt and hear the pin rattle when you finish, at least I think the Yugo is suppose to? Anybody correct me if im wrong.

Yes, the firing pin on an SKS comes out. You have to remove the pin. See this link here to remove an SKS firing pin.

Collecting and Shooting the SKS Rifle - Bolt Disassembly and Reassembly

Make sure to put the pin, both the firing pin and the firing pin retaining pin back in the proper way. Pay attention to how they come out...

If you use brake cleaner, DO NOT get it on and finished surface. It will take the finish off wherever it touches it. Especially on the metal surfaces.

I soaked a bolt in kerosene for 3 days. worked great. but like they say above don't forget to lubricate .

what i did when i first got my SKS because i had no clue how to take the bolt apart to clean it and i was in a hurry to shoot it, i actually took a can of engine starting fluid, that had one of those thin plastic straw things, and it was small enough that i could push the firing pin back so it wasnt sticking out of the hole, and could put the tip of the straw right into the hole and just sprayed the heck out of it. Worked good. over 100 rounds throught it before winter hit and not one slam fire.

what i did was the water idea cause my resources are not the best right now. i boiled water and let it heat up the cosmolene inside the bolt. i took it out and started flushing out all the nasty stuff that was up in there with oil. i then soaked it for about another five minutes and the shook it around some. this nasty black gunk stuff started coming up from it so i dried it off, drenched it in oil and played with it for a while and its as good as new. i didnt even take it apart. thanks for everyones help. i must admit this is the best forum in the world. ive never had a question/problem that somebody on here didnt know. thanks again....oorah gentlemen

even small amount of cosmoline in really cold weather can lock the pin and cause slam fires not a good situation a hammer a block of wood and a punch and you can have the bolt apart in usually a few minutes.

An L shaped block of wood works best. You can rest the ends of the bolt on the 2 different ends of it and have an open space between for the pin. I just removed the pin in my Dad's SKS today and cleaned it up some. Took about 5 minutes to remove it, clean it, and get it back in a working properly.
