Scoped my K-31

I finally got around ordering a scope mount for my k31. Ordered it from brownells and it came in quickly and looks fantastic. I went cheapo and got the aluminum one and it is very solid and quiet heavy.

I then went to my local gun store and picked up a Pentax gameseeker 3x9x40 with the bdc. I have the 3x10x50 on my 444Marlin lever gun and love it. The optics are as equal to nikon, leupold and the rest but the scope only cost about 100.00, not to mention the bdc is a very nice touch.

For rings i went with some steel redfield rings which were pricey, but solid.

I had never mounted a scope in my life and it took about 10minutes. The mount from only has 1 screw and is stupid simple to install, but is also rock solid. The scope mounts alittle to the right of the reciever to allow the empty rounds to be ejected.

I was worried that i wouldn't be able to get a decent cheek weld with the side mount but it works perfectly. You can also still use the Iron sights with the scope on which is nice.

I only had 10 rounds of ammo so i fired one shot from a 100yards to make sure i was on paper. I was about 5" to the left of the the bullseye. After i checked that round i went ahead and fired the other 4 shots to see how i was able to group with the scope and all shots were in 1" group. I was smilin from ear to ear when i went to check my target.

I then drifted my windage over to get it centered with the other 5rds. Everything functioned perfectly and i'm one happy camper. Of all the modern rifles i own "browning, remington, marlin, savage, winchester" the old k-31 is the most accurate and fun to shoot. I've gotten so used to the 2 stage trigger on my millitary rifles that when my dad let me shoot his new fn herstal i completely jerked my first shot off target. Now i need some ammo.

Sorry but no pictures until i buy a new camera. My fiancee left ours out on the deck last night and it got soaked.

The K 31 looks so sweet with a nice scope on top. If only ammo was more plentiful I would get one or two. I heard that it is not only expensive, but finding the ammo is more than half the battle.

I found some at dans sporting goods for less than .50 a round so i went ahead and ordered a case and a half. I think 720 rounds will last me for a little while.

Here's a link to the site where I ordered from. Shipping was very reasonable, and prices are the best i've seen. I'll keep you updated on how the Customer service is.

UPDATE Got a New camera

Well I finally got a new camera. I love this new one. It is a olympus and it is waterproof, shockproof, and freeze proof. So hopefully it will last a bit longer than my last one.

Here's some pics of the rifle with the scope mounted. I also got in my ammo from dans and it looks fantastic. Stuff looks brand new.

Thats a beautiful rifle. I want to order a K-31 sometime this week, any reccomendations as to from where, what type of finish i should look for, and how much i should pay? I think it should cost anywhere from 200-220 right?

Definitely go with classic arms. They are the best internet vendor I've ever dealt with. The ordering lady is a bit gruff, but they will stand behind their product and ship very fast. Not to mention their prices are better than most.

I've used poly with stain, BLO, Tung oil, and tru-oil and so far tru-oil is my favorite finish. It dries very fast and is the easiest to get a good looking smooth finish.

Thanks for the respone guys.

Hey Big Tool,
I also like Classic as received my K98 from them about a month ago. I am curious as to how good the condition of the wood was on your K31? I am considering getting a second one, maybe walnut this time...

Forgive me, but I'm new to the wood refinishing process (my other two rifles are an AR-15 and Ruger 10/22 with a folding stock)...can you just rub "Tru Oil" on the wood? Isn't there some sort of sanding process..?

EDIT: I mistyped in my previous response where I asked what type of finish to look for, I meant what type of wood is preferred for the stocks. My apologies.

You don't have to sand it, but if you don't it will have dents all in the wood from being carried around the swiss alps for the past 50 years. The finish would also be kinda odd colored i'm guessing because the stock has a shellac finish on it.

The absolute easiest way to refinish it without sanding is to simply spray the stock down with easy off oven spray. let it stand for a few minutes and then wipe down with a paper towel. The easy off will make the old finish come off and you can then take a rag and wipe off the old finish.

You can then rub the stock with some 0000 steel wool to smooth it up a bit and then start applying the tru-oil. Honestly sanding will smooth up all the rough spots "there will be lots on a k-31" and will give you a smooth finish and only takes a few hourss to do.

I've gotten three from classic arms and the wood was pretty good on two and pretty rough on one. I refinished the rough one first and it turned out great. I then refinished one of the better ones and that is the one in the picture.
