| Registered User | Slug gun accuracy I'm looking for a new slug gun for accuracy. My definition of accuracy would be to take a 1 gallon milk jug and trace the bottom on the target and consistantly hit that at 150 yds. My 1100/scope/rifled bbl can maybe hit it once. I always seem to get flyers. I shoot off a lead sled. The new Ithaca deerslayer111 looks interesting. These 15 dollar a box(5) slugs sure get you frustrated. My circle of friends are in the same boat. We're about to go back to smoothbores. One guy is doing pretty good with the H-R. We've tried about every slug out there. Any Idea's???? What are you slug guy's shooting and will it fit my target criteria? Thanks for any thoughts. |

| Super Moderator ![]() | From Chuck Hawks..."Shotgun slug loads intended to be fired from smooth bore barrels manage to combine the worst properties of any hunting projectile: marginal accuracy, low velocity, low sectional density, low ballistic coefficient, rainbow trajectory, and heavy recoil. Nearly the worst of all possible worlds! If you can legally hunt with a rifle, you owe it to both yourself and your quarry to do so. If not, but the law allows the use of fully rifled "shotgun" barrels and saboted projectiles, that is what you should use." Shotgun Slugs I am a Competition shooter and I can't put em in an 9 inch circle at 150 yards, Just too much of a Rainbow and shotguns are not MOA guns... 50 yards Ok, 75 yards good, 100 yards=5 to 6 MOA...Sabot slugs give a bit of advantage, But I prefer a rifle for anything over 75 yards... | Registered User | I am talking about the new saboted projectiles. Rifles are illegal here or I'd be using my rifle. At 15-20 bucks for a 5 shot box I think we should expect some decent accuracy from these sabot encased rifle bullets. I can go back to the old foster type slugs and do almost as good as these for a heck of a lot less money. I'm just hoping someone out there has found a good combination. Ithaca has a video on their website showing decent groups at 200 yds but who knows. I am leaning their way. |

| Senior Member | I can also only hunt with slugs, and honestly i don't knwo if there is a good combination. Best i ever did was about 3-4 in. groups at 100 yards. That was with my rossi single shot 20 gauge. Still not great and i would rather not shoot at much anywhere over 100 yards,so that got me by. Otherwise i can use my muzzleloader which i usually do because its a lot more accurate. |

| Registered User | If you read the original post it is'nt about hunting skills it's about accuracy. God knows between bow, handgun, muzzleloader and shotgun I've harvested enough deer. I'd just like to take this shotgun thing to the next level and I thought with all the folks that are on this site I could get some feedback on this new stuff. I've been stuck with the smoothbore stuff since '74. So far it seems that the rifled barrels and saboted slugs are a waste of money and you all could be right. Thanks though for the opinions. |

| Member ![]() | u are not going to get that kind of accuracy out of a slug gun, I have an HR bull barrel slug gun Single Shot, and with the hornady saboted muzzleloader slugs I can put 5 slugs in 4 moa at approx 150 yds. but I think that is very rare to get that kind of accuracy, but all HR guns shoot well.

| Senior Member | You might be expecting a little too much I have a Rossi rifled 20 gauge which I really like. Mounted with a Bushnell scope my son and I sometimes enjoy filling empty 3 liter soft drink plastic bottles with water and shooting them at about 75 yards. 150 yards is, in my opinion, a bit much to ask from slug guns at this time concerning the accuracy you seek. However, I do feel with the explosion of demand for slug guns we will soon have heavy, long, varmit/target style barrels and more precision in factory loadings to maximize accuracy. I can envision within a few years target matches with a slug gun category. So, the accuracy you seek may not be that far away timewise. I try to keep up with the websites of slug gun manufacturers and what we are discussing is a big reason I do it. |
