Today (yes, middle of March) I finally got a chance to get my Swede (1941 Husky) out to go deer hunting.
Wisconsin has a CWD Eradication season until the end of March, and this morning my buddy shot a nice little doe fawn with his Spanish Gaurdia Mauser and wondered if I wanted it? Since I had time, I grabbed my Swede and wandered up to his place. We ran into town and registered the deer, and since I still had most of the afternoon left, I went out for the evening hunt.
The deer, 5-6 of them, saw me before I got to my stand and so I spent the first hour on stand watching deer from about 400 yards away. I had a group of 3 to my left, and a group of 12 or so to my right, and none were interested in coming my way.
As the afternoon was winding down, more showed up in both groups, with 12 to my left and around 30+ to my right, and nothing but open fields between them and myself.
So, I sat enjoying the view and the 35 degree day..
With about 15 minutes left of daylight, something spooked the big bunch and they spread out.. I figured I'd wander back to the house, and while walking a fat doe ran up and stopped about 140 yards away.. I aimed and pulled the trigger, and the 140 grain Remington Corelok found home right where I'd aimed, dropping the fat, adult doe where she stood.
So, I finally got a chance to take a deer with a mil-surp rifle!! She was slightly quartered to the right when I pulled the tigger, and the bullet entered between her neck and shoulder, and no exit wound was found..
I'll be skinning and butchering both on Monday, and I'm hoping to find the slug from the Swede.
So much for "eradication" when you can watch 4 dozen deer eat and play from one spot, eh?? 2 more weeks of season, and I'm thinking that I might need one more in the freezer..
Sorry about the fuzzy pic, but my beater camera doesn't like trying to focus with no light.. Oh well, you'll get the idea..
