I have this, it's a great product whenever weather threatens or the power is out this is with me.

firebird45331: Good find.At Radio shack you can have a "modern crystal radio set." receive 1-6 different channels.
A string of wire and presto; receiver.
you can adjust for additional receiving points.

Remember: higher the antenna the more likely to receive or transmit.
Inverted "V" will give you dual plane reception.

Personally, I own a:

1. Kaito KA009S ... crank, battery and electrically operated. Has FM, AM, TV1, TV2, Air, WB, and SW1 - 4.

I have to many radios. LOL
Have several scanners that will scan pretty much from CB to 800mz police band and every thing inbetween. also have several regular CB tranceviers and FRS radios an crank type radio a desk top weather hazard radio as well as a handheld. also have Marine band radios and a few old motorola police band radios that i reprogramed for the VHF MRS fregs. so i could use them when camping and such. like I said I have got to many radio.

Try this site: "Crystal Radio: The Xtal Set Society"

It's all about building simple cheap Crystal Radios.

Fun and recieve only. Needs no overt power.

Uses ground magnetic wave resonance. With simple adaptation you can have a multi channel reciever

Now those with different talents; transmit with 1.5w around the world. Again a simple alternative.
Crystal radio; I'd have in the scenario presented.

For emergency comms, I have:

1) Car-mounted compact CB radio.
2) Two Motorola Walkabout FRS/GMRS handheld radios. Range is limited, and there may be no one using one within close enough distance - better for comms between people/teams working together.
3) Midland WR-100 Weather Alert radio at home - warns me of storms/emergencies. Compact and light enough to take camping/hiking/bugging out.
4) a small AM/FM hand-crank/Solar radio I got from Sportsman's Guide years ago - cheezy but it works. I carry it when camping.

I searched the net a while back trien to find the perfect radio for me during power outages and this one looks to be O.K.

Well Larry I some times judge some things buy the price because I'm willing to pay more for durability sometimes.
The Midland and many others are around $60.00 I found in my search. So maybe one is as good as the other in this price range.

The other popular crank brand that I think starts with an E I think, it seems to be a good one and it sell's for about $60.00 and has several colors to choose from.

I did see some very expensive do all radio's that were way out of my price range too.

I wonder how long the hand crank part will last on these radios ?

What I would really like to have and was looking for, was one like pictured in the first post with cassett and CD player.
Also to use on a reguler basis...A.H

I too will pay for durability and my concern is the same as yours, that crank seemed fragile to me.

To pay $100 or so for a durable storm/survival radio to me is not out of line. To pay $200+ ... out of line. Cassettes and CD availability are not necessary for me... clarity and durability are key...

A ham for the world, a CB for in state, two Motorola hand helds and a Sony AM/FM/SW/ radio. The crystal radio is a good idea. If there was a Nuc winter, there might not be much sunlight. A crank radio would be good. I have built a 24 volt battery charging system from an old rechargeable mower. It will have 24 volt for lights and 12 volt for other stuff and an inverter. I'm converting the old exercise bike to make a generator.
