| Senior Member | Been quite a while since I last visited this hobby so some of my info is either missing or I'm just not sure of. I used to clean my barrel after a range visit with Windex, is that still recommend? Or, is there a new method that has proven to work better? Thanks. |

| The windex is just to nullify the salt in the barrel to keep it from rusting. The Hoppes you would use to actually clean the rifle afterwards. so yes, patch, crush, bore cleaner, normal stuff. The only magic is getting that salt from the corrosive primers neutralized with Windex or whatever the flavour of the month is

| Use Windex in generous amounts at the range. Spray the barrel and action. If shooting with bayonet extended make sure to windex that as well. Then follow with Hoppes. Best thing to use is a bore snake! They are the best money anyone will ever spend on cleaning equipment. I keep one in my range box and one at home. Soak the top of the bore snake in hoppes, pull it through a time or two and you are done. I sometimes follow the Windex with WD40 to chase the water out. I found that it will take finish off the stock of you are not careful. My message to american shooters: BUY A BORE SNAKE.

That being said if you cant clean them in a hr or so go ahead and use the windex and a couple of patches with hoppes on them then clean when you get home .. I run a bore snake thro mine then clean them with hoppes an then oil lightly

| So Marion, I want to understand what you are saying about cleaning. If I understand right you run a bore snake with Hoppes through the bore at the range then clean up with more hoppe's at home? Do you use soap and warm water when you get home? To clean the rifle, Marion. We ALL know the answer to the other. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() There is so much info out there about different ways to clean. Gets confusing after a while. Do you use only Hoppe's and gun oil? I read somewhere that only using hoppes will keep the salts next to the barrel but not remove them. I also read somewhere that Hoppes was the only gun solvent specifically designed to clean corrosive ammo salts. What is your understanding?

| Windex is for windows. I use Birchwood-Casey Bore Scrubber - it has far more ammonia than windex, is made for firearms, and one jar will last a long time. Don't need the Hoppes. Swab the bore with the Bore Scrubber and let sit a couple minutes. Then dry-swab it. Then use CLP or your favorite gun oil. Never a problem with corrosion, even in humid Florida!
