Newby w/ Remington 870 Wingmaster w/ a Question

I'm quite new to firearms in general. I fired a rifle when I was a young teen, but that's it. A friend of mine and I decided we want to learn how to hunt, and we've been interested in guns for some time. We did a fair bit of reading on the subject and decided on starting out with 12ga pump. We went to a gunshow in Indianapolis this weekend. He picked up an 870 Express and I bought a Wingmaster. Well, I have a bit of rust on my sight and I wanted to know if anyone has any recommendations on how I may take care of this problem. It's very light rust, but I don't want to mess it up. It's my first gun and she is a Beauty!

I appreciate any advice!

0000 steel wool and wd 40 spray the gun the pad and wipe lighty it will come right off without any harm

I have used BREAK FREE (CLP) it is the best rust killer I know of...

Welcome to G&G!

The 870 is an excellent shotgun, you made a very good purchase.

A couple of good recommendations have already been brought up, and I'm sure more will be later on. I don't have much experience in removing rust, but wish you best of luck.

Welcome Jackal! I was with a friend at a gun show back in Jan. that picked up a rust removal pad. It looked like a fancy "brillo" pad made of a chrome or stainless type material, it had curls and was bunched up into a ball like shape. The dealer said not to use any oil when rubbing out the rust. I guess you remove the rust and then you apply oil. Just another item to look at. I'll try to see if I can get the product name for you, the cost was $5.00 I think.

You say you have rust on the sight ? What model 870 is it ? Doe's it have a rifle sight meaning you have a slug barrel on it or does it have a bead ?
You'll need a good oil and I agree with FishPond go to WalMart and buy the breakfree
with CPL it the best stuff I've used yet and the military use's it too.
Now please explain in a little more detail about your Wingmaster please ?

First off, I really appreciate the good, quick responses. I heard this is a great forum and it's already living up to that.

On to the Wingmaster, it has an improved barrel, smooth bore, with rifle sight. Now the sight is somewhat textured, and colored, like the barrel. Am I going to run into problems with rubbing that off at the same time as the rust? If so, what should I go about doing to refurbish the sight?

Welcome aboard. I use a brass brush, tooth brush size, and CLP to go after light rust, go lightly. If you have any bare mental after cleaning, use some touch up blue.

I agree with Madcratebuilder, excellent advice....Also I'm at a loss as to why rifle sights are on a smooth bore barrel unless and probably it was sold by Remington to be used for slugs, before rifled barrels came to be.
Never the less you can hunt a lot of game with a smooth bore...A.H

Yes, you can hunt about anything there is with a good smoothbore shotgun! I puzzles me also why they would do that. You have gotten your question anserwed quite well.
