Got the Scope on my 10/22 Finally

After gashing myself in the arm and all the other hurtles involving rings and mounts and God knows what, the scope is finally in place on the 10/22. Now all I have to do is bore site it and be on my way. This is the first scope I've ever owned. I have one more to get and it will be a much better scope for a bigger rifle.

You've got a very nice looking rifle S.L the stock is perty and the scope really sets the rifle off.

I see you had to go with those see-though mounts due to the size of the objective lens as I mentioned in the "ever use these mounts" post you left. To keep the objective lens off the rifle itself that is. Looks good. Remember though, the boresighter will still only get you on the paper. You'll have to fine tune it still.

The way I've been told and done it, is to shoot a 3-shot group. Then find the center of that group and move the crosshairs to that point. But, the key to it all, is taking and aiming all 3-shots, and having the rifle in that same spot when you find the center of the group before and when you move the crosshairs.

Now I'm not saying that because you don't know to do it or anything. Just thought I'd throw it out there. And remember, if it's off say down and left, adjust it up and right. lol

That confused me when I first had to do it. I'm still learning all areas of the scope thing. Hard to do, takes time when there isn't really a decent rifle range near you, well near me that is. lol. Just one of the many reasons I want out of Illinois.

Those are actually the mounts I wrote that thread about. I decided to put them on and give them a chance. I decided before even looking at scopes that I wanted see through mounts. I like using my irons whenever possible and got the scope to make up for indoor ranges. So with that in mind, I didn't mind so much that the scope had a massive bell.

I don't plan on using the bore sighter, to be honest with you. The bore sighter at work always sets the scope high and to the right, and that's the good one. The other one doesn't even get the scope on paper and I think it may have "gone missing" by now. I may use the laser bore sighter if they allow me to borrow it for a moment and nothing is missing. Otherwise, I figure I'll just adjust until I hit paper and then go from there. I've put lots of scopes on rifles before at work, but normally I don't shoot them in for customers. Two reasons: 1. I get a lot of 300 Win Mags and larger and I will not shoot them in 2. I tend to be shorter than my customers so I always tell them I could get it in for me but it would be on paper only for them and they'd have to go from there. Most settle for the bore sighter and leave it at that. I've only had one guy insist that I shoot in his 300 Win Mag and one of my wonderful co-workers volunteered to do it for me. LOL!

Yeah, it cost a little more than the average 10/22 because of the pretty stock, but I decided to splurge and land me a colorful gun. I still haven't gotten it out on the range, though.

It's from Ruger. I don't know if it was one of those special editions or not, but apparently it wasn't popular. That poor little thing sat on our shelf for almost a year and I just decided it was for me. There's another one out there with a similar style and different colors. I want to say green instead of red, but I don't recall. Haven't seen it in a while.

Oh, no, not at all. I think it's a decent round. My shoulder just can't handle them, personally. Not long enough to shoot one in correctly, anyway. I just let the men folk do it if they are willing, and some of them aren't willing, either. LOL!

I tried what I suspect is a somewhat unique way to "boresight" my .22 gun yesterday. The gun has a heavy barrel with a constant outside diameter. I just held a laser level against the barrel in the 12, 3, 6, & 9 o'clock position, and marked the laser point on a target at 11 yards. I used PointBlank software to determine where the bullet should be at that distance compared to the line of sight, and just adjusted the scope to that. Overnight I realized I had not compensated for the drop of the bullet at 11 yards (about 0.2"), and compensated for that as well today. Will see how it works out next week. Unless I screwed up in the calculations I should be within 0.1" at 11 yards, so hopefully under 0.5" error at 50 yards.

I got to test my rough sight-in method yesterday. I ended up about 1/4" low and 3/4" left at 40 yards. Finally a use for that laser level that sits and collects dust in the basement!
