Remington 788

I have acquired two Rem 788's in the last few months and am fixing them up with Timney triggers. Got the first one from Lock Stock & Barrel and thats all there was. I finally was able to get one direct from Timney and it should be here this week. They are in 6MM Rem and .222 Rem and are groupng well with my handloads. Any other 788 fans out there?

i grew up shooting a LH 788 in 6mm, they are great budget rifles- very accurate.

bought one way back in 75, in .243 Win, sweet shooting accurate little budget rifle never had one single complaint with it wish I had it back now!

Terrific rifles. Search out the history of these, it`s an interesting story. Bare in mind they stopped making them in the early 80`s though.

I once owned four of them 6MM,.243, 22-250 and .308 and lost em all in a Big D back in 1980. Now I am trying to restock the pantry and what I once paid $100-$150 are now pushing $400.00 and maybe up. But what the heck it's still a fair rifle.

I've got one in .222 Rem that I got in exchange for doing some work on a friend's house. He modified it by having the clip slot electrically welded solid, converting it to single shot. He modified the stock to be a benchrest version and added a 20X Tasco scope. I have shot some wonderful 4 shot single hole groups at 100 yards but could never get shot #5 to quit be there. It still has the skinny 22 inch factory barrel. I always wanted to rebarrel it with a short, heavy barrel but never could prioritize the $$ to do so.

The only complaints I ever hears about the 788 was bolt compression in the heavier calibers that it was chambered for due to having the locking lugs in the rear of the bolt instead of at the bolt face like a Mauser design.

ive seen a few around here .. i picked 1 up for 1 of my boys 2 years ago in .308 ... the guy only shot it 7 times . when he pulled i didnt even have to look twice... gave him 300 for it ..... all this thing needed was the box. i knew where there was 1 in 30/30 , but they wanted 350 for it ... my neighbors old hunting buddy passed a year ago and he had 1 in .44 mag.... im trying to get my hands on that....

I still have one from 1972 that I paid about $90, I added a single stage canjar trigger. I have attached 2 of 4 pages of original manual. I can add last 2 if interested. It is in 243 and has taken mostly wood chucks. This year I plan on some coyote hunts after I swap off the old Weaver variable for a better night time scope

I just sold my 788 .308 that would shoot .5" groups all the time and still have a .222 that will put five shots in about 1/4" on a very regulsr basis. My favorite bullet is Sierra 52 gr.
