Arrow SAVAGE 99E, 60 Y.O.

I've inherited this rifle and refinished the stock and reblued the metal. It has very low use and is in excellent condition. I am trying to find the value so I can decide whether to hunt deer or sell it. As I reload, I also would like to know what bullets/loads would be best. I would appreciate any help...

Les, I have a similar rifle a 99E (2nd edition) in .300 Savage. What caliber is yours...this can make a difference in the value. Also can you tell if the stock is walnut or hardwood. The earlier edition of the "E" model had walnut and is more desireable as well as older. You may have significantly hurt the true value of an older 99 by refinishing stock and bluing, making it much less desireable to collectors, but still desireable as a shooter. Many older 99s in good original condition were selling in the $750-$1,000. range, and as a shooter, I'd say it would still be worth $400-$600(maybe higher). These values are simply guesstimates. The caliber and knowing for sure it's an older "E" model would make a difference in value. As far as bullets, if it's a .300, I'd say try duplicating the factory 150gr loading, and also keep in mind, even though there are pretty much only 2 basic commercial loadings for the .300, that 150 and a 180, you can find lots of good 165gr bullets (Nosler Partition or Speer Grand Slam) which might be an ideal load for it.

If you refinished and reblued it The value would be whatever it is worth as a shooter.Any modifications to a collector item reduces the value and major ones like blueing usually lowers the value to whatever it is worth as a hunting/target firearm. sam.
