10/22 with a 22 inch barrel

I just found a new 10/22 stainless with a 22 inch barrel, checkered hardwood stock, scope rail for $ 238 at Walmart
Seems like a good deal but what are the advantages or disadvantages of the 22 inch barrel.
I have old eyes and figure the longer sight plain may be of some advantage.
I will use it for hunting, plinking and some informal target shooting up to 75 yards.

Doesn't really make a noticeable difference, basically just what you want. Slight difference in velocity and maybe accuracy but negligible for the most part. Get it tho! i have the 10/22 carbine and love it

Yes, and they also posted in the Ruger forum, but I wanted to make sure. For $238 bucks, I'd say gopher it if it is Ruger. But after looking at wally worlds website, quite a few brands came up as far as .22 caliber so I just thought I'd make sure. 'Cause for $238 bucks, I might have to go get one if it is. lol

BUY IT!!! I saw one about 3 yrs ago and ran down and bought one for myself (about $210 then). It's the best model of the 10/22(to my eye) being SS and also offering the feel in hand of a full-sized rifle making practice more meaningful for those of us who also shoot a lot of high powered rifle rounds too. It's accurate and feels to me like a big game rifle in everything except recoil. Mine also wears a typical big game scope 1.5-4.5.

Ruger 10/22 Rifle with 22 Barrel - Wal-Mart

May have to get this for my son. Been promising him a .22 for some time now and this way I could use HIS money instead of mine or ours. lol Have to get permission from the warden first though. lol Wasn't thrilled when I got the pellet gun. Not 'cause she's anti-gun. She's not. It's more of the typical mother and son worry thing. Just needs to be reminded it doesn't go into his hands unless I'm there. Doesn't have access to it because it's in my safe.

And it is a really good price. Problem is, bet the Walmart near me doesn't have them in stock... Usually the case for stuff I"m looking for or wanting. Thanks for the heads up Montveil, I appreciate it.

Kind of considering this one also though.

Only difference is camo finish and barrel length, 18 1/2 " instead of 22". Possibly other minor differences but no biggy. Have to consider either that's for sure...

I like the long barrels they may not be more acc. but the longer sight plane is nice and they look like all business my Winchester 52 rifles have 28" barrels and look so cool.

I have a Ruger 10-22 with a after market 20" match grade bull barrel, and it seemed to greatly improve the accuracy of my rifle, course its hard to tell how many thousands of rounds went thru the original carbine barrel. I have also recently found that you can order vertually any rifle from Walmart that Lipseys.com carries. I just special ordered a Savage 17 HMR that they didnt show in their catalog, I just called Lipseys, which is THE gun provider for Walmart and they set everything up as far as the order number and such. I also ordered my Ruger Mini 30 the same way. Good Luck!

Hmm....that would be pretty cool, but I would hesitate to buy it. A while back I was talking to my brother. He's been into firearms for a long while and LOVES doing anything with. He was also an mechanical engineering major in college, so his opinion on some things carries some weight with me. He told me that the .22 LR cartridge doesn't have enough power to propel the bullet more than about 18 inches through barrel. After about 18 inches, it loses power and the bullet actually begins to slow down. So when it comes out the barrel, the velocity is less. Whether it's true or not, I don't know. But it makes sense because that round isn't all that powerful, but I could easily be wrong. Someone who KNOWS please enlighten me.

Well one way to prove it is to take a 10/22 with a 22" barrel, shoot it using a chrony and see what the velocity is at the muzzle.

The 16-18 inch barrel is considered optimum for the 22lr, lot of testing done over at rimfire.

Maybe i will have to use high velocity rather than standard vel ammo.
Using the parameters given,it might perform better with the hyper velocity rounds now offered

Oneof the best things about the 10/22 is all the aftermarket upgrade accessories available. You can do ANYTHING and spend as much as you want to that platform. Buy it, you and your son will love it. I shoot in my yard at 25 yards with mine and recently took off the cheap 3x9 TASCO scope off of it. I found out to 50 yards, a scope was not nessesary. They shoot that well to that distance.

I like the heftier stock of my "Wal-Mart Special" 10-22 Rifle. It fits us big guys better than the usual 10-22 Carbine stock.
Accuracy is so-so - many of my older twentytwo rifles shoot better.
