| cheap ammo
I bought some cheap ammo from Walmart over the weekend, it was bottom of the line Remmington .223 for my AK (5.56) and I had about 3 of them missfeed and jam. It seems when the bolt is grabbing the next round off the magazine the shell gets a bit bent and it knocks the projectile back into the casing just a bit and jams from the case being bent. This ammo was like 14 dollars for 20 rounds. The hammer never even hit the primer because of the casing being bent. They ejected just fine and I could fire off the next round no issue. I stripped my AK after the range and it is still pretty clean. The previous owner didn't shoot it at all very much. So, I went back up to that local gun store that sells the .223 hand loads and those fired like a champ every single time again. They are $23 for 50 rounds, but I feel a bit skeptical about buying someone's hand/re-loads. The range does not allow any military projectile round, so no steel projectiles. What are some good cheap lead rounds I can buy in .223 for my AK? On a side note I noticed that my barrel seemed to get really hot after firing off about 40 rounds or so. Is that expected for it to get real hot? How hot should a barrel get when firing it? I probably put just over 100 rounds through my AK this weekend. |

Sorry, I probably should have said the cheapest ammo I could find at Walmart. My AK chewed up the casings of those bullets and a few of them jammed. The hand loads I keep buying for $23.00 for 50 rounds keep firing like champs but I am still a bit skeptical of buying someone's hand/reloads if you know what I mean. I did notice that some of those hand loads were getting a bit scuffed on the casings as well. What could be causing my AK to do this? Is it grabbing the ammo too hard/roughly, or am I just getting crappy ammo? I stripped the sucker down after the shoot and gave it a good cleaning, though it was barely dirty. I'll take it out again in a week or so and shoot so more targets. thanks |

My ak's wouldn't know what to do with that purty remington stuff. They get a healthy diet of the cheapest Wolf brand junk i can find. I've actually been very pleased with the new wolf ammo i've been buying. It shoots fine in the AK, but in a AR it's a jam-o-matic.

| +1. For AK's and SKS's Wolf is the best bet unless you're trying to win competitions.

In regards to the barrel, yeah, they get pretty durn hot. Your barrel will last longer if you shoot five shot groups and then let the barrel cool, but that's up to you.
