| Where are you in Colorado, FMJ? Do you know about the public range on US40 between Kremmling and Hot Sulphur Springs? There's some long ranges there, but I'm not sure how long. Still closed for the winter and under snow last time I was by. |

All things considered, if I had to go into combat with a bolt action, all else being equal I think I'd take a Mosin-Nagant rifle over a Mauser 98K or even a Springfield. They're not as pretty as the other two, but lordy, do they shoot! | |

| Now the happy owner of an M39, I can tell you that the Finns crafted, rather than manufactured their rifles, and the front and rear sights are head-and-antlers above the Russian version. So I'm not surprised that Hayha (a true marksman) could shoot with the stock iron sights at several hunderd meters. My eyes are nowhere near that good, but I can't wait to get the M39 cleaned up, finish healing, and get my butt (and the rest of me with it) out to the range. |

But it would be hard for me to choose any other standard military rifle of that time over my 03A3. Them things can shoot too!

| Ok, Billy, now you have raised my curiosity. Why do you say that? I don't know much about Enfields.

| spiritual counselor ![]() ![]() | i have owned at least 1 example of every rifle you guys mentioned and the enfield is the best one IMHO. really smooth fast, short bolt throw and more accurate than i. TeX, if you got a good enfield i can almost guaranty you would feel the same way. thats whats so cool about milsurps. you can afford to try just about all of em!

| It is on my wish list! I have a Jungle Carbine. Have not shot it but it does look well made. Carbine was just in rough shape when I got. Cleaned up pretty well though. Hear a lot about wandering zeros with that model. That is why I am looking for another model as well.

| Thor's Hammer ![]() | I am also intrigued by the Enfields. But I have yet to come across a nice one. Although I have yet to fire mine, I think the K-31 also meets Billy's attributes above. Another one to throw into the ring would be a Swedish Mauser.

Billy is right though, the Enfield action has to be one of the smoothest, best & fastest. Try a "Mad minute" shoot between an Enfield #4 and a Garand (at say 100 yards) and see how they compare. More info: The fast-operating Lee bolt-action and large magazine capacity enabled a trained rifleman to fire between 20 to 30 aimed rounds a minute, making the Lee-Enfield the fastest military bolt-action rifle of the day. The current world record for aimed bolt-action fire was set in 1914 by a musketry instructor in the British Army — Sergeant Instructor Snoxall — who placed 38 rounds into a 12" target at 300 yards in one minute. | I know this is off topic, but since it's an oddball question and we're all deer hunters, I figured it'd be a good starting point.. I shot a nice doe with my Swedish Mauser, and I did almost zero damage to the hide, with just one small entry hole near the neck. I'm looking for a place or someone that'll tan it with the hair on. It was a big deer, with a fantastic coat, and it was the first deer I've shot with a Mil-Surp gun, so it's sorta sentimental, too.. ![]() Rather than running this off topic, if you know of a good place, just fire me off a PM.. Thanks!!! Now back to your regularly scheduled discussion.. ![]()
