Stock Repair

I have a Springfield M1 Stock (S. A. / G.A.W) that has a repair made to the stock (see pics). I received the stock on a rifle I got from CMP a few years ago.
To best describe the repair:
There are four brass pins securing two 3" x 1/4" replacement pieces of stock where the trigger housing plate is attached. Could it be an arsenal repair? The Stock also has two 'P' proof mark (one with circle and one without), which I am assuming this additional 'P' reflects that it was sent back for refinishing?
Questions:
What would have caused the need for repair (damage or alteration)?
Has anyone seen this repair before?
How much does it affect the total rifles value?
Thanks for any input you might have!

My IHC has those. Fixes a lock-up problem I'd imagine.

Looks like a well-done arsenal repair. That area of the stock was relatively weak and often needed repair. The use of brass pins was a common repair technique used by goverment arsenals.

While it does slightly lower the value of the stock, it's not by much. Don't try to "improve" it !
