Yugo M48 Rifles

Hey, those rifles look sweet. I understand they can be bought in brand new or like-new condition.

Does anybody know how much they cost?

Bought one at Big 5 a few months ago. Stock is a little rough, metal is excellent. Good shooter. $80 on sale.

The M48 action is a little shorter than a M98. The stock bolts are 3/16" closer together. Be careful when buying parts or a replacement stock. Some Yugo 24/47 rifles are the same.

I don't believe the rear sight can get down to 100 yards/meters otherwise a good rifle.

Since the M48 has pretty much NO historical value, it makes a good one to sporterize. Good shooters that do best with their own Yugo 8mm ammo. If you can find it, the 70's production ammo is best! The 50's production ammo tends to have lots of 'no-fires'. Poor storage resulting in the primers being corrupted, methinks!

Excellent choice for a Mauser shooter. I have two. The nicer one will stay as-is, the other is being sporterized.

One cution on sporterizing them: The magazine is just long enough for the 8x57. Anything longer will require magazine work. However, I hunt with the 8x57. With handloads it is an excellent cartridge for any North American game hunting.

I concur with the statement on older Yugo ammo. I get about one misfire out of every two boxes (30 rounds). They have all gone off on the second try. Not really a factor for range work.

The Yugo ammo is very light. Point of impact is a lot lower than my reloads. It does group fairly well.

Buddies at a different forum have warned me Yugo 8mm ammo is too expensive. They recommend Israeli Mausers in .308.

I have many thousand rounds of 8x57, and have not bought any in a while. I have trouble believing .308 ammo costs less than 8x57. Both are good shooters.

If you are in the market for a short barreled Mauser, the M48s are some of the best available owing to their having been produced after WWII concluded. The action is optimized for 8x57 which makes it less than an ideal platform for standard .30-06 length cartridge conversions. 8x57 is a lot more expensive these days than it used to be, but is still half the price of virtually all commercial ammo. The sights are battle zeroed for waaaaay out there, so a tall front sight blade swap out adds $15 to the purchase price. You will be hard pressed to find a better value for your dollar IMHO.

I wouldn't even bother with ancient ammo. The price of the old, corrosive stuff has caught up to the price of Hirtenberger which is non-corrosive, brass cased, boxer primed and reloadable.

I have an M48 and it is a good shooter. I'm going to polish it up a bit. I gave $80 for it and it even came with the bayonett.

The Yugo M48 shoots okay with the cheaper Turk 8mm ammo, but since the Turk stuff is a bit hotter, and has a different weight bullet, the point of impact will be different. Mine tends to shoot high with the Turk ammo.

I sent you a PM. Looks to me like the rifle's parts are worth more than the asking price. So, I would say it is a good deal. Either as a shooter or as a parts rifle either one.
