Thinking about a 10-fp

I'm selling a set of tires this weekend so I'm gonna have some extra play money. I'm deabatin on three things. A S&W 686, Savage 10fp 308, and a 10fp in 223.

If I get one of the savage rifles it will used for target shooting. I want something that I can practice with on a regular basis. I will be shooting at 100,200,300 yards.

I would rather the 223 for the low recoil and the cheaper ammo.
The 308 for the extended range, and ability to hunt with if I choose to.

Will the 223 be able to shoot consistently @ 300 yards or will the wind drift have the bullets flying all over the place??

Also does anyone know of any decent 308 ammo that can be bought for .50 a round???
