If I get one of the savage rifles it will used for target shooting. I want something that I can practice with on a regular basis. I will be shooting at 100,200,300 yards.

I would rather the 223 for the low recoil and the cheaper ammo.
The 308 for the extended range, and ability to hunt with if I choose to.

Will the 223 be able to shoot consistently @ 300 yards or will the wind drift have the bullets flying all over the place??

Also does anyone know of any decent 308 ammo that can be bought for .50 a round???
The .223 will be just dandy at 300 yds. It ought to be good at 500 yards!

It's a good rifle and I'd put good ammo through it. I won't use anything but good, commercial ammo in 168 grain HPBT in my .308.
