I am a fellow pheasent hunter. I hunt live and hunt in Iowa. My uncle lives in South Dakota. He and I started talking about me coming up pheasent hunting with him in but after he indicated he didn't want me to bring my dog I quit talking about it. He says there is too much sent for an out of state dog, that my dog would just go nuts and ruin the hunt. Well that is fine, but I don't go hunting with out my dog, it doesn't happen.

| Mr. Fudd... You are fixin' to become a very popular fella. I hunt LOTS of stuff, but especially like Pheasant hunting. I'd be willing to tell you now, I'll trade you Pheasant hunting there for some good deer hunting here. Enjoy your Easter... |

I live in NE Oklahoma and I'm not what you call a pheasant hunter but for the past few years I've been pheasant hunting one day a year in middle northern Oklahoma. (No pheasants where I live.) This place is not far from the middle southern Kansas border. I'm guessing this is about as far south in the US that one can find pheasants. Might be wrong though. First time was about 5 years ago. Absolutely loved it! Great exercise! A friend of mine has relatives there and we now make it an annual hunt.

| Senior Member | Sure Elmer But the pheasants around Pennsylvania are mostly long gone. I talked or should i say wrote on another thread about that episode but the pheasants are my favorite. In the 60's LOL..... pretty long ago ..There was pheasants everywhere in PA, now it is all stocked birds that i find are pretty dumb like me. They mostly run on the ground to get away and i don't shoot those. The others flush, but half will flush to a tree. Don't shoot those ones. The ones that flush naturally are taken as best that i can shoot. The grouse are plentiful and that now is my favorite. I once went to a pheasant farm to hunt but have mixed feelings about those. It was fun and not so much as a challenge but at least they had some. But to pay around at that time $10.00 per bird that got real expensive and that was in the early 1980's. I like turkey hunting also, there has been so many around my back yard i need not go very far to whack one in the fall and one in the spring. Thanks for the opportunity to post a little info and i'll stop back to post a few hunting birds for ya later ifffin if you would like. Take care....................earl |

those are some good looking pheasents but we have lots here but they are realy smart becouse you get good hunting the first day like we will limit out with a group of 20 in an hour but then people come in herds up here and hunt the chit out of them so they bury up and hold tight so if you dont have a good dog it will be hard to hunt.

I do some pheasant hunting elmer. I am in Minnesota, and have hunted the Dakotas. For me, if I don't have my dog with me, I won't even waste time chasing pheasants.

| Senior Member | Elmer Yep i heard about those pheasants your way. Same here the crouds come and the birds also hold up tight. My brother in law asked me to join them in the youth hunt around butler PA. He has seven boys, just under 16. Naturally him and i could not carry a firearm. A fella stopped as we were counting bats and asked if the boys would like to hunt with his dog. The dog a britney, was a female and he told us the dog is not the best but it is the best he has seen. The father said sure and as daylight was conducive to hunt off we went. I quit counting flushes after 20 and the boys didn't get but three, they need the practice. One held up in not more than 3" of grass and the dog pointed and still no one saw the dang thing, we started to stomp the grass and it went up. The young boy drew up and fired in front of six other hunters that seen the initial excitement of the dog and all watched as he whacked the hen down, boy was he proud he got that one. I can a say for not being aloud to carry a gun, that was one of the best times i had ever had. My dog is a Mastiff Lab Mix they are called Mastadors. He is 114 pounds now and a little over a year. He is a cement head like me and seems to have not much interest in the hunting end, the dog doesn't even like to get wet, and no swimming yet. He lasts around two ta three flushes and wants to play. I went hunting by myself a lot this year and on one occasion i hooked up with a older fella that was not able to walk very good, bad knees or something. He asked me if i wanted to hunt over his dog i said sure. His dog believe it or not a yellow lab that was three years old wanted only to sniff and hold on flushes until we cranked them. I sure was impressed, we limited out.........hey write to ya later. Keep the fire burning and the coffee hot ...........earl http://www.gunandgame.com/forums/att...1&d=1206627745 A few more pixs................. |

| Senior Member | Hey ya GSPKurt Glad ya liked the photos. Being retired, i have to watch my pennies LOL.....I would love to do something like that, i hear Kansas is a great place to hunt the pheasants. What kind of shotgun do you hunt them with? And where in Kansas do ya hunt them? I just traded a few old sterlingworth doubles in on one of those Ruger Red Labels. I have shot it and burned a lot of shells out of her already but i missed the ending of our late pheasant season. Hope next year i can write a few notes on how this new gun follows up for me. I don't like talking very much about this gun for fear most folks might get a wrong impression on me. The gun was very costly and i just got lucky trading it for this new one,so far i am very pleased with it ,but next year will tell if i can wack some birds with it. Take care and i'll check later on ya...........earl |

Our numbers in IA were down last year. We didn't have any real bad blizards and no bad ice storms in my part of the state. Central and Eastern Iowa got hit pretty hard with snow this year so that may effect the numbers in those areas. The most important thing now is that we don't have a really wet spring. If it isn't too wet then there should be good nesting results and perhaps we can improve the numbers in our part of the state. Generally speaking the numbers in our part of the state are lower than others.

Yep, do a lot of pheasant and quail hunting in my neck of the woods. We have maybe 3 sections of CRP that we hunt. Can usually limit out twice a day if we wanted to but try to leave seed. Hunt mostly during the weekdays cause the Uncle's let the Chamber of Commerce have the land for their fund raiser opening weekend and closing weekend. Damn good crop this year. Have a good friend that hunts with us that uses a bow. Shoots what he calls "foo-foo" arrows. Standard length arrows with what looks to be a feather duster on one end and a 6" wire basket on the front. He usually limits before I do. o~\o |
