For bulk ammo, I love Federal Value Packs (525 Rounds).

As for higher quality ammo, I like CCI Mini Mags and CCI Stingers.

thats what i get at walmart i 550 value pack the pack you get is at our ace hardware store in our little town for 23 dollers and i can git it bigger at walmart for about 12 dollers

I havent tried a whole lot of .22s but for general plinking I like federals 550 value pack. They are high velocity, 36 grains, copper plated, hollow point, 1260 feet persecond at muzzle, 125 lbs at muzzle, 5.6 in drop at 100 yards. They are pretty good and cheap the 550 pack is about 13 dollers here at walmart. For longer range and hunting I use CCL stingers. They are 32 grain copper plated, hollow points, 1640 feet persecond at muzzle. Thats all the info thats on their 50 round case. The ccl stingers cost about 4.99 a 50 round case. I normally buy 10 at a time. my gun store has a 10 pack 10% off deal on all ammo lol.

For plinking, Winchester Dynapoints bulk pack.
For serious shooting, CCI Standard.

That's interesting BD! Why CCI standard? Consistency? Or Consistency vs. price?

CCI Standard is very consistent - it's basically the same ammo as the more expensive Greentag, but not as tightly grouping. Best ammo for it's price range. CCI Minimag is good too.
I'm looking for the Federal Champion - I hear good things of it. Supposedly it's the old 'Lightning' load renamed - I hope so, as I really liked Federal Lightning.

In preparation for a range visit to find out what ammo works with a new gun, I have weighed 50 of each of the brands I plan to try. It is controversial but some believe you can sort the rounds by weight and improve accuracy. I will try and prove or disprove that theory, but I mainly just want to find out what works in my gun, and is reasonable in cost.

One of the conclusions I have come to is that uniform weight in the bullets is likely an indicator of manufacturing quality control, and accuracy potential. The Lapua Midas is probably the #1 (or possibly #2 compared to Eley Tenex) choice of Olympic target shooters. The consistency of weight of that round was totally amazing. The whole box of 50 weighted within +/- 0.05 grains -- the smallest amount I could read on my scale. Remington currently have a name for having about the worst ammo on the market -- poor accuracy, and frequent misfires at least in some types. Not surprisingly they came last.

The STD is the standard deviation of weight. If you multiply that number times 3 then all expected weights should be within +/- of that value. Smaller is better. The DIFF is just the range of weight from highest to lowest in my sample. Obviously smaller is better.

No idea how they will shoot, but hopefully I can report that later next week. I don't think weighing them is the be all and end all for evaluation quality. Friends report that the Dynapoints are the most accurate low cost bulk ammo that they have found (better than the Federal), yet it has a relativly poor weight consistency. Obviously there is more to accuracy than weight consistency. I am expecting the CCI Blazers to do well though, and my friends have not tested them yet, so I will find out.

In The Gun Digest Book Of .22 Rimfire, the author measured the rim thicknesses of many .22's. CCI has the thickest and most consistent. This is important in the Beretta Model 21. This pocket pistol does not seem to ignite the primer on thin rimmed .22's. My brother and I both had problems with ammo other than CCI in this gun. Remington Gold 550 bulk pack had the most inconsistent rim thickness. I find this to be the dirtiest ammo that I have shot, too. I like Federal bulk and many of the CCI's.
