If you intend to move up to a semi-auto,there are a lot of choices. The Bennelli Super Black Eagle II is a workhorse. Others available are Remington 1100 series(soft shooters), Winchester SX2 or SX3's which are clocked at being the fastest semi-auto shotguns in the world,Mossberg has some, and Smith and Wesson's 1000 series looks decent and more wallet friendly than the above. I am looking into them (the S&W) myself for a first one. Happy shopping! |

Super Black Eagle II is amazing, price not so much. My cousin has a S&W 1000 and i also love that gun. Check winchester 1400/140, etc. Had one of those taht i loved too. Good cheap semi auto. If you got the funds get teh super black eagle or a browing guns too, very nice guns as well

If you want to buy something different than the 870 I'll recommend the new Mossberg 930 semi auto to you. I own 1 ea. Remington model 1100 and 2 model 870's and the Mossberg is the better of the 3 to me. It's a very nice shotgun it shares the same gas system as higher end shotguns and wait till you aim it, your going to love it. The con about the 930 is the wood stocks are not as pretty as the above mentioned guns so I bought the BLK synthectic stock/Matte finish model. You'll get a fist full of chokes and stock adjustment shimms where you can fit the gun to you. You can pay more for a shotgun if you want too or you can get this higher midrange priced shotgun. Check one out, you might be glad you did...A.H P.S. If your interested in a Pump Action please make sure you check out Mossbergs 535 ATS models while your shopping. I have a SBE II and I absolutely love it. I hunt ducks and geese with it and I shoot clays informally with it. I have never had any malfunctions of any kind. Even with all the debris, moisture, mud, and gunk that gets in my gun when I'm sloshing in the swamp and crashing through the brush to get to the duck pond and while I'm hunting and retrieving my kills (man, I really need a dog!), it always goes BOOM, BOOM, BOOM (and the ducks and geese fall like rain as long as I'm doing my part!). This gun will cycle all shell lengths and loads without any modification, you load 'em, it shoots 'em. For waterfowling I shoot 3.5" steel loads while I shoot the 2.75" field loads for the clays. I've even interleaved them and the gun functioned PERFECTLY. Yup, I'm a die hard Benelli fan. The SBE II is one of the more expensive guns, but I am firmly convinced it is worth every penny. Oh yeah, the ComforTech stock really does work like they advertise. I have a buddy with a SBE I that doesn't have the ComforTech stock and I have shot my gun and his gun side by side and you can really notice that the ComforTech stock has less recoil and better control. And, the action of the gun also soaks up recoil. Shooting this gun is really fun because it doesn't even feel like you're shooting a 12 gauge. If your budget allows it, I think you would never regret getting one. ClayMan |

I have never been much of an SBE fan. My buddy has an SBE II, and it was having major cycling problems. We cleaned it very well twice, and still wouldnt cycle even the heaviest 3.5 inch loads, and he sent the gun into benelli. I shoot a Beretta Xtrema II, and love it. It shoots a little softer than the SBE, and have not once had a jam. My clay gun is a 391, and I put a lot of jam free rounds through that too. They are just as easy to clean as an SBE. One thing nice about the benelli's is they feel lighter and smaller, even if the difference is small. Beretta did address that somewhat with the Xtrema 2. I have an old Remington 1100, and while its not as nice as the Beretta, it costs a lot less and if you keep it clean, it will shoot great. |

| Apparently you liked your 870.... How about you simply replace it with something just as reliable...just as classic, and maybe even a little easier on your shoulder. Look everywhere you can and buy yourself a 2 3/4 or 3" Browning auto-5. Period. A quality used, like new, one may even cost you less than those OTHER auto guns mentioned. Trust me...JUST DO IT!!! |

wait, you actually wore out ur remington 870?!?!? wow, what'd you eventually break? only thing ever broke on mine was the carrier, and i have yet to figure out how my buddy broke it. but i bought another one for $17.99, and it's good as new. also have a charles daly semi-auto 12ga, and it's lasted me about 8yrs, and still going strong....took a few boxes of rounds to "break it in". it seemed to have a 'draggy' action, prolly just real tight tolerances, but now the action sounds like an ak-47 action....'ch-chink' hehe, dunno if thats good for a semi-auto, considering this is my first one. any replies on that would be helpful.

Brownings,upper-end Rems,Winchesters, and some others. The $500-$1,000 range has quite a few from Rem,Winnie,Stoeger(a div. of Benelli, owned by Beretta),S&W 100 series,Mossberg 930's,Wetherby(which looks like a twin of S&W's 1000 ser.,both made in Turkey)........ It's really up to you.Put a lot of 'em up to your shoulder and aim/swing 'em.Whatever fits you and you like the best. That's the only way to tell. | |
