20 gauge?

Hello! My father wanted me to do some research on some 20 gauge shotguns for a birthday present for my mom. He wants me to find one for around $350 or under and it will be primarily used for skeet shooting. I like the Mossbergs and Rugers if I can get one for that price. does anyone have any suggestions on what I might look for or a good quality shotgun?

Hello,
Try looking on gunbroker.com to get some ideas. They have a brand new Mossberg 500 pump with different chokes for $229.00 Also some pawnshops have guns. Dont know if you want used or new, single shot, pump, or semi-auto. I grew up shooting Mossberg 20g. They are great guns. Let us know what you get.

Benelli/Nova pump

You might find a new or perhaps slightly used Benelli/Nova pump in
your price range. They would be of interest due to their lighter weight.
If possible, check one out at local gunshop.

Good luck and good shooting.

I would look at the stoeger line of shotguns. Great gun for a good price.

For Skeet shooting, I prefer an O/U or semi-auto. Maybe check out some stoegers, remington has a lower priced o/u. and maybe look at some guns on the used shelf.

Whatever he gets, make sure it fits him well.

Look into Mossbergs. And to add to what Lng Rng said, your dad might want to check the length of pull on whatever he's looking at before he buys it. If it is to long for her, she won't shoot very good with it, well might not anyways. If she's small in stature, maybe consider a youth model. Some makers even make womens models now. But I think those are going for a bit more than $350 bucks.

Good luck and please let us know what he ends up doing and or going with.

New shooters are sometimes sensitive to recoil, even with a 20 ga. I am teaching 3 kids coming up soon and will use a mossberg youth model, my stevens SXS, and my buddy's BPS all in 20 ga. I am loading a 3/4 oz load at 1150 fps. Not every one can load though. This load duplicates the 28ga load & should be easier on the beginners especially my daughter who is a stick figure.

Semi autos are good for reducing felt recoil. It's still there just spread over a longer curve. The above advice on fit is good advice. jaeger mentioned the charles daly line. not a bad gun, maybe not a lifetime gun, but if she likes it she can always upgrade later. It will get closer to the 350 price mark.

I agree with this and only add a fixed modified choke should serve well if you are shooting skeet only, but if you go to trap or sporting clays, changable chokes might be handy. sam.

thanks for all of the advise. I will look at all of them. I am leaning towards a Mossberg just because my dad has a model 500 12 gauge and it is a very good gun. I went to their site and they sell most of their shotguns for under $350.

Well we got her a Mossberg model 500c in 20 guage new for only $260. we took it to the range this morning and all shot some clay pigeons. She still doesn't like the amount of kick that it gives though. does anyone have any suggestions on how to lower the kick? We were talking about just getting another one in .410. The gun itself seems to be very good and my dad, my brother and I were hitting most of the clay with no problems.

A good butt pad will help. I would not recommend going to the 410. Recoil is great but there are so few pellets in the round that it makes hitting anything with it very hard.

Make sure the shotgun fits you. That will do a lot to reduce felt recoil.

I actually shoot as good with my .410 as I do with my 12ga...it's kind of bizarre.

To lower the recoil, look into a really good recoil pad, both for the gun, and one that wraps around her shoulder. Limbsaver makes some nice gun recoil pads.

I would suggest the remington 870 pump but I don't know if they make that model in 20 gauge tho? personaly, recoil for me is not an issue? I would go with the 12 gauge 870 pump. this way if you wanted to shoot trap you could purchase an interchangable barrel for a fraction of what another shot gun would cost

good butt pad
lighter shot
get a 28 before 410, range is severely limited for trap/skeet though....tell her to toughen up and use a 12

I would look at the Charle Daily. The are sweet shooting shotguns and function like the more expensive brands.

Her length of pull?

I do not know her size, build or length of pull.Too long will give her a fit as she will not be able to hold it correctly.A youth model or youth stock and fore end may help.If that alone does not do it,a x-tra thick mounted or a simple slip on recoil pad over the mounted one will bring the youth back to adult length with PLENTY of pad there between the two of them.

Keep us informed. We are still learning too.
