1911 Holster

I found out last weekend that I will be inheriting a Colt 1911 from my Pappaw. Its a cherry, he bought it in the '70s and has at the most 1/2 of a box of ammo through it. Im thinking of getting a CCW and want to know if you guys can recommend a good CCW holster for the 1911. I realize that the 1911 is kinda big for CCW but it will work until I can afford a smaller weapon.

The 1911 will work fine for CCW. I would recommend a good belt slide. I use a Don Hume JIT. There are others. I have not been happy with inside the belt, inside the pants, or paddle holsters. Do not buy a cheap belt slide unless you want to see your pistol skidding along the floor. Nylon holsters are for amateurs.

For a big gun like a 1911, a shoulder holster is an option. I have always found shoulder holsters cumbersome.

Wow, lucky you! With the value of that 1911 (sentimental as well as monitary), I'd consider another carry gun. If you want a 1911, there are smaller carry frames offered in .45. Color me green.

I agree with the Nyolon Holster Comment. However, I carry mine in a cheap Uncle Mikes Neoprene on the small of my back more then I use my nice leather belt or shoulder holsters. This has a lot to do with my 6'3" frame and thin build I think. And the way I dress. I just can not hide something on my hip most of the time. The $5 Uncle Mike holsters seem to do it for me the majority of the time.

A lot Depends on your frame and what you are going to be wearing that day. Bottom line is you are going to have to find something you are comfortable with. I have multiple options for carrying, and I spent a lot of time becoming comfortable and familiar with them all. But I still prefer the cheap Uncle Mikes most of the time.

Yeah, I have had second thoughts about carrying it due to the senimental value. But it would be cool to be able to carry it on my side, it would be kinda like I had a little bit of my Pappaw with me.

I have another question about my 1911. A friend of mine said they sometimes have feed issues with hollowpoint ammo. I was wondering if anyone had experienced this and what kind of self defense ammo do yall use?

My stock GI, with a polished feed-ramp, will feed anything I give it. I cast and shoot semi-wad-cutters through it all the time. Never had any feeding issues. Unless you modify it way out of Browning's original spec's it should feed anything you give it all day. I usually carry hand-loaded jacketed hollow-points in mine.

If you have concerns about feeding issues it will always be in the back of your mind. If you shoot a few boxes of whatever you plan on carrying (can be expensive I know), and it feed 100% reliably, it will take a large weight off your mind...
I ran into some of that Ranger Ammo a while back that had excessively hard primers for instance, I am super-happy I fired a few magazines before I started carrying it around. Failed to fire on first strike an average of 3/5 times...scary stuff

I havnt had any feed problems with my colt model 80 goverment edition. I would exspect this isnt your only pistol, so switch them out for CC. I carry my colt in the winter time so my jackets can hide it. In the summer I'l cary keltec or even a raven, some thing I can put in my pocket.

Join up at the two top 1911 forums, m1911.org and 1911forum.com. You'll learn everything you want to know about 1911's there. FWIW, most guys that carry 1911's prefer the Milt Sparks Versa Max II inside-the-waistband holster. Top quality, but there's a waiting list for them. Lots of other options of course, I personally carry a Compact 1911 and use a Beltster.

Oh, and the MOST important component for good CCW is the belt! A good quality belt made for carrying a gun in a holster is a MUST! A regular old belt won't cut it, not enough support.

Which model 1911 are you talking about?

Load your gun, cock and apply the safety. Hold the gun in your regular grip, slip the gun inside your shirt toward your left hip. Stick the barrel inside your shirt, under your belt and pants with the butt above the belt toward the front. Walk around a bit and rearrange as needed. I've carried everything from a SAA to a Gov't Model to a Glock 22 like that for 30+ years. It's not for running a race or doing cartwheels but it works.

Figure out what works best for you, go to your local store and try them all dressed how you dress most often.

Glad you respect your dad so much, something that has seemingly been lost on much of our youth. My dad left me with a couple weapons and I will cherish them forever, best man I ever met.

What do you fly? Or do you mean fly low as in a vette?

Sorry it took so long to get back to ya. I used to fly Cessna 152's and 172's. I haven't flown since just before 911. Not because of 911 but because I got married about that time and my prioritys changed!

I hope to return to the sky someday when I can afford it. Nice avatar btw, thats a beautiful aircraft ya got there!

I carry the smaller version, Colt officers model. I agree with the post before. The 1911 will set on my left hip, butt forward. Try it you might like it. I would recommend you practice alot with whatever you end up with and be safe.
