Enfield question

Sorry to any who read the gunsmith threads...I posted this question there as well to maximize info gathering...

Do any of you know if it would be worth it, if it's even possible and how much (ballpark) it might cost to change the caliber of an enfield from british .303 to 7.62x54r or any other closely matching caliber. I know the bore would have to be redone, as well as the chamber and maybe even the mag. I ask because I really want one of the enfield rifles, but am concerned with not only the cost, but the availability of the ammo. British .303 is expensive, and the mosin nagant 7.62x54r is really cheap by comparison. It's something I willl base my enfield purchase decision on, if it's to costly to shoot it, then i'd almost rather not have one. Thanks for any advise and info.

Can it be done? Yes. Will it cost more than the price you pay for the enfield? Yes, probably. If you figure in the cost of the rifle plus the chambering I think you would be able to buy a lot of that "expensive" ammo for the cost of rechambering.

I like the Enfield. One can find them chambered in 308 as well.

My advice would be to keep the 303 brit chambering and have fun.

Hmm, well I don't actually have the enfield yet, I was just wondering before I bought it. I do however have a mosin, and will have a few more wen the c&r finally arrives. Maybe i will just keep my eyes peeled for a .308 enfield.

308

Why not buy a 308. Enfield made them in the 60's at the Ishapore arsenal. I got one from SOG (Southern Ohio Gun) for $189 with my 03FFL. Anyone interested in Mil-Surp guns should apply for one. It is easy and cheap $30 for 3 years and wholesalers can deliver old guns to your door.

Roadie,

When your C&R arrives check out SOG. They have Enfields in .308 available as C&R guns, made in Ishapore, India in the 1960s. They claim "very good condition" and have a $170 price tag. Are they any good? I'll never know. The State of California has banned any mags that hold more than 10 rounds. These come with a 12 round mag. Which irks me, I'd love to get one because of the wider availability of .308. But I can't.

I collect old military rifles. I own and shoot the .303 Enfield Mark I and Mark IV and the Ishapore .308. Although in my opinion the Enfilds are the UGLIEST rifle ever made they shoot like a knife through butter. They are relatively easy to clean. There is not a lot of difference shooting any of them. The actions are very smooth. The safeties easy to use and understand. I shoot just about every WWII Military rifle. Why waste your time and money transforming a rifle when you can just buy a .308 Ishapore.

cheapblaster, I got mine a couple of years ago @ $169 plus $10 for select. As you stated they come with the 12 round mag. I think the supplier of my rifle was sending them out to Kaliforia with the 10 round mag. You might do a phone call to see if SOG will do something like that for you. Just a thought.

Course ya do. As do we all on here. But I wasnt comming over to poke yer eyes out. But I understand what ya mean. Here now say this once for every rifle you own.

"This Is My Rifle"
THIS IS MY RIFLE. There are many like it, but this one is mine. My rifle is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I master my life.

My rifle, without me is useless. Without my rifle, I am useless. I must fire my rifle true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will....

My rifle and myself know that what counts in this war is not the rounds we fire, the noise of our burst, nor the smoke we make. We know that it is the hits that count.
We will hit...

My rifle is human, even as I, because it is my life. Thus I will learn it as a brother. I will learn its weakness, its strength, its parts, its accessories, its sights, and its barrel. I will ever guard it against the ravages of weather and damage. I will keep my rifle clean and ready, even as I am clean and ready. We will become part of each other. We will...

Before God I swear this creed. My rifle and myself are the defenders of my country. We are the masters of our enemy. We are the saviors of my life.
So be it, until there is no enemy, but Peace!
