| Check that the gas valve is in the right position. If it is, clean the entire firearm thoroughly. For disassembly/reassembly for cleaning see this link. Collecting and Shooting the SKS Carbine - Disassembly and Reassembly For gas valve info, see this link. For shooting ammunition, it should be in the like 2 o clock position. For shooting blanks for the grenade launcher, it goes in the 12 o clock position. and to take it out, 12 o clock then push down and towards you if I remember correctly. Clean it our also. If it needs to be fixed or parts replaced, search or google Yugo gas valve. But I'm sure it's either gas valve in wrong spot or dirty. | Bullet Maintenance !! ![]() | I have to agree with above. Strip it down and clean her real good. Pay special attention to the chamber. Make sure your gas valve is installed and set correctly.

| I bought it from someone who cut the barrel I got there old thing for cheep. I thought the barrel may be too shot and there would not be time to bild up the back preshure. witch will couse a slower pistion return. I think the caesing has to much time to espand prior to ejection. if the barrel is to short is there a remidy? thank you |

| Senior Member | Since the barrel has been shortened, one way way to remedy it would be to load your own ammunition using some pistol powder which will burn faster allowing most of the powder to burn by the time the bullet reaches the end of the barrel. Or you could drill the gas port a tad bit bigger. Doing that you risk messing something up unless you know what you're doing. I personally wouldn't try it at current time if I had a rifle like yours. And as mentioned above, pics would help a lot.

| I am not a gunsmith but if the length of the barrel is longer than the gas tube then I don't think it would make much difference in cycling the bolt. I could be wrong though.

| Senior Member | Well the gas is pressurized as long as the bullet is in the barrel and preventing the gas from shooting out the end. The gas hole is smaller on longer barrels SKSs as they are on AKs. The reason is that pressure is held for a longer period in a longer barrel. In a shorter barrel, the bullet leaves the end before sufficient pressure is built to cycle the action completely. I hope I explained that well enough...

| I used a .17 brass brush to clean out the port. the cartreg still did not cycal however it did not jam for the frist 5 rounds I could manuly cycal it after firing it.then it jamed and i have to take it all apart. so maybe I am moveing in the right direction. now can a sks be to clean? someone told me that could be the problem I dont think so. I just had another thought will a muzzal breake do the trick? Last edited by josh55; 03-26-2008 at 11:03 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

| That looks like the correct gas valve and it's in the right position for shooting ammo. But that is NOT the correct gas tube and it looks like it would leak. If so, there's your problem. Where the gas tube meets the gas valve. IF that seal is not solid, it will leak. Also, if it cab move back upon firing the gun, it's escaping on each shot. Is that gas tuber one piece or 4 or 5 pieces? If 4 or 5 pieces, you got many leaks. Hope you didn't pay much for that thing. Might see if they'll take it back? Have a feeling you're stuck with it. My honest suggestion, take it to a reputable gun dealer, tell them the problem (and if they're good they'll know before you ask by how it looks) and have them inspect it. Are you sure it isn't or wasn't stolen and someone just butched it to try and hide the fact?

| AAAH those pictures explain a lot!! Well & truly bubba'd! The chances of that rifle ever working properly as a semi are remote. Even with the paratroop SKS-M there was about 3" from the gas take-off to the muzzle. It looks like you are not getting enough gas back to fully operate the mechanism; Firstly, clutching at a straw, I assume you've stripped & cleaned it properly, if not do so now?? If thorough cleaning of the gas system doesn't work, then as somebody else has apparently told you, you could try opening the gas take-off hole with the next size of drill bit, I doubt you can make it any worse, if that doesn't work, then........ Remedy 1: Relocate the gas block, shorten the gas tube & piston by 3-4" & drill new gas take-off hole in barrel. Remedy 2: Remove or plug the gas tube/block completely and use the rifle purely as a straight pull bolt action rifle! Remedy 3: Get a smith to fit a new/or replacement barrel. Remedy 4: Try a float test, take it to a flooded quarry/sand pit etc. and throw into deepest part & see if it will float. Where's the foresight?????????? Is it still Legal??????????? | Senior Member | I just quick checked my Norinco, and if I were to cut it down to that length, the barrel would be 14-15 inches long. So basically, you have a short barreled rifle in need of a tax stamp to make it legal. Now as far as the gas tube goes, that may or may not be a problem. True, and first look it looks aftermarket and weird. But y'all look at the picture again. It's an original tube with everything removed, and some kind of plastic stuff slid back over the smaller part of the tube. So that's my evaluation. Now remody...as stated above, its not going to work with the gas port where it is. Plain and simple. It need to move back at least 3 inches to work. Also you could remove it and is it was a manual pull bolt as also was suggested before. But before you do anything, you need to sit down and think about it. That rifle is illegal. You need to figure out if its worth the risk having an illegal rifle that doesn't work properly, and if you really value it, is it worth a $200 tax stamp. With $200, you could buy a good condition SKS that does work. If you decided to dump the one you have, you could just take it too a gunsmith and get him to remove that barrel and put another on. I don't know how much that would cost though. If you don't want to do that, you could just have him completely disassemble the entire rifle, and sell it as parts, then buy another SKS. *edit Oh yeah! Something else you might could do. Weld that muzzle break on! When you weld it on, it legally becomes part of the rifle, so your barrel would be legal again. Of course, that's rather permanent and you'd still have feed issues.

| Senior Member | You're quite welcome and I hope you get it fixed up and working! It looks great like that! You just need to fix the gas tube and make it legal and you'll have a sweet set up for close ranges!
