2-shot plug?

well, i jus got my NEF Pardner 12 gauge yesterday, and as i was reading the manual, on the How To Load section, i read this "Your shotgun was shipped with a 2-shot plug installed..." then i got to the How to Remove the Magazine Plug, i read this on the end of the instruction, "Your shotgun now has a magazine capacity of five."

so when you guys bought ur shotgun, it can only carry 2 bullets, but if you want to make it carry 5, you have to take out the magazine plug? so this is how it goes when it comes to shotguns?

I know that the Remington 870 comes with the plug in a bag (at least my brothers did). I also know of someone that bought a used 870 without a plug. They called Remington and were shipped a plug, free of charge.

I own a mossberg and it came with a plug already in it. I just took the thing apart and removed it. No problem. Just can't go hunting with it ;-)

ususally the plug is so you have 2 less shots, usually 3 is allowed for hunting, take it out and you have five.

For waterfowl hunting we can have 3 shots. 1 in the chamber and 2 in the magazine, which equals 3 shots. For small game, pheasants, snow gesses ect.. I can take my plug out and use 5 shots, or 4 if I choose to shoot 3.5's.

i just tested it out putting some ammos and can only put 2 in the magazine, i guess i'll be taking off that plug to fit 5 all together. or is it 5 all together or 5 plus 1 in the chamber?

For bird hunting, you're allowed 2 in the tube, 1 in the chamber, for a total of 3.

For other game (deer, coyote, elk), you're allowed 5 in the tube, 1 in the chamber, for a total of 6.

Check your local laws though to be sure.

+1.... I have to tell ya... when I first started deer hunting in Ct., in the 70's, they required a plug for deer hunting...with slugs too!! I promise you, i couldn't even make something THAT dumb up!!

Best advice you were given: "Check your LOCAL laws..." (emphasis mine).

From the CT DEP Hunting and Trapping abstracts: "Shotguns must not be capable of holding more than 3 shells when hunting waterfowl, other migratory birds (except crows), deer, and turkey."

In other words, yes I may use a shotgun capable of holding 5 shells BUT I guarantee there had better be NO OVERLAPPING seasons. If I am hunting crows but turkey/woodcock/duck are also in season, an ENCON Officer (Conservation Officer) could (conceivably) cite me for being in violation of the 3 round limit. As a fer instance: a number of years ago a buddy of mine had been crow hunting, on his way out of the woods (with his unloaded/empty shotgun) he was practising his duck calls. An ENCON officer cited him for duck hunting after hours and without proper permits. Crazy? You bet but it happened; it's all about interpretation and perception, and how you or I perceive it don't count...

Shotguns in differing jurisdictions often have limits on the magazine capacity for hunting purposes. Manufacturers provide
magazine plugs as an assist for purchasers who might purposefully or
accidentally overload their magazines in a hunting environment.

Before hunting I advise you check with the state game and fish dept.
to be in compliance with any restrictions. Regulations do change and it is always best to be current to avoid problems.

Across the Pond in the UK the rules are similar but different if you know what I mean. Technically, you can have as many cartridges in your mag as you want, for all wild-fowl, game & vermin. Though more than two is "frowned upon" by tradionalists when shooting game!!
Only thing is the licencing; shotguns have to be restricted (permanently) to mag capacity of no more than 2 (the mag tubes have to be crimped), if it has more than capacity of two cartridges, it is classed as a Firearm and requires a Firearms certificate and the licencing is much more restrictive.

As the other poster said, Remington packs the plug in the box, so you have to install it to be legal for waterfowl.

here in ohio you still have to have a plug when you deer hunt....not that big of deal i dont think becuase about everything i hunt you have to have a plug so i have never taken one out of a gun...

i love mississippi......i've never read the shotgun shell limit, but the warden hunts with us and in his words "i use as many shells as i can to hit those bastards and to kill as many as possible without reloading"....this may be why mississippi hasn't hosted olympics yet....the 'releasing of the doves' might be mis-interpreted as a 'dove-shooting event' by us rednecks.

so how would you put 6...load it with 5 first and pull the action bar and forward to load the chamber and then put another ammo in??? and after putting the 6th ammo, i dont have to pull the action bar and forward again right??

My M1 Super 90 has two plugs, I can limit the capicity to 3 rounds or 5 rounds or have 8 rounds, but I'm not sure it's legal for waterfowl. Most states require a plug that can not be inserted or removed without taking the magazine apart. With the M1 Super 90 the plug is a small rod that goes in the end of the magazine tube with a small washer to hold it in. It can be put in or taken out without unloading.
