i dont think it would be east west south north boundries its more small town or big city. i am from Michigan in smalltown USA. almost everyone is nice willing to lend a helping hand hadnt had any real crime in like 15 years. but when you get to big cities like new york or detroit it gets bad

I live in WA...traveled to MO. It seemed the closer to MO the friendlier the people. On that trip, however, the most unfriendly people are found in WY. CO is not far behind.
ID, MT, UT, SD were fine.
The midwest is where it's at.
The west coast and the PNW people suck!
I'm sure all that friendliness will change as soon as the CAians get in the know.

Good evening. I want to take my wife to Alaska so bad. To you two who are up there, I'm envious. To MRS. S, I understand why you left. In a few years we will be living outside Cheboygan. Full of peace and quite. Oh yeah, and plenty of deer. What I don't understand is what is so hard about common courtesy, and respect.

Why thank you mad hatter I live just 10min from Mooresville, and if you want to move hear I am sure you noticed there is plenty of homes for sale and more being built. the houseing slump has not got here yet that I can see.

Once you get south of the Mason Dixon just talk a little slower, wear a ball cap avertising something and do not order a double latte with your grits and eggs and you will be ok.

I have been following the housing prices in N.C. the last 5 years and noticed they went up a lot.. Not as insane as around here, but I would say near doubled..

I've found alot of the rudeness and lack of courtesy is more a result of the population density rather than the North/South connection however I do and did experience a real difference in general manners overall between the rural south and the more rural north east and north. Especially with our winter Texans (snowbirds from the north residing in RV's over the winter here). Some can be the nicest folks but most from my experience are the most obnoxious, arrogent sob's you ever care to meet. My normal response to those folks is generally "If you think it's so bad here GO HOME and don't let the door hit you in the azz on the way out!"

My hubby (from Arkansas) thinks people in Kansas are weird. He is used to having lifelong buddies back home and it takes a lot to develop that here. Even then, the only time they want to be his best buddy is when they want something from him. People will go fishing with him as long as it's his boat and he brings the bait. They've even shown up with no money and he feels bad and buys their lunch. People want to ride the roads but don't want to chip in for gas. I can see where he gets his opinions from. Women are the same way here. I can tell the difference when I go home with him. The people are totally different, much nicer and don't expect anything.

I've been a lot of places in America, and out of everywhere I have lived/traveled people are nicer in Colorado than anywhere.

I'm semi-retired in the Smokey Mountains, N.C. Only worry I have with breakins is a black bear coming through the windows looking for food. Mad Hatter, theres a TV channel in Atlanta WSB-TV. I was told it stands for welcome south brother. Cost of living is much lower in the south and we are getting more and more migrants from Chicago and New York and they bring their attitudes wth them,after a while they seem to loosen up. I've got a big lake at the bottom of the mountian within 22 rifle shot, National Forrest on one side and Cherokee Indian Resevation on other side. From my deck I can see moutains as far as one can see. People here are really really laid back, even though it seems like a rather short gene pool.

No, anyone is welcome so long as they aren't rude, arrogant, obnoxious, and don't try to tell us where they came from is better! Well, being a yankee from NY, I can understand how alot of you feel. You have to get away from the cities and then and only then, you'll meet some nice folks. Here we say "thank you", "please","mam",and all the other sayings that make one feel good. We live in a agricultural county, with nothing but fruit trees. Some orchards are so big the NYS Troopers patrol them in helicopters, looking for illegals, drug deals, etc. We have one light in town, and EVERYTHING closes at 6, except for the pizzeria, which closes at 10 during the week. One large grocery store, two gas stations, two garages, and one liquor store.Our biggest deal is "Apple Blossom Festival" where we celebrate the newly popped apple blossoms. Very small town stuff, and I never have to lock my house, or for that matter, take my keys out of my truck.
Oh, and I don't want to forget, a NASCAR-sanctioned track.1/2 miles paved, with a 1/8 mile dragstrip.If anyone is traveling through Williamson NY, stop by and sit a spell!!! You all are always welcomed here!!

Hawkeye: its not that Michigan overall was bad; I spent my life living in and in the outskirts of, Detroit; if I had to go back to Michigan, I would go to the U.P. like Munising or Escanaba; very country-like there and folks were much more laid back and kind.

I found when I was in Florida that I had no probs in the less populated areas, but in the bigger cities (Jacksonville) I'd have to agree with you stalebiscuit.
