| If you are in the market for a short barreled Mauser, the M48s are some of the best available owing to their having been produced after WWII concluded. The action is optimized for 8x57 which makes it less than an ideal platform for standard .30-06 length cartridge conversions. 8x57 is a lot more expensive these days than it used to be, but is still half the price of virtually all commercial ammo. The sights are battle zeroed for waaaaay out there, so a tall front sight blade swap out adds $15 to the purchase price. You will be hard pressed to find a better value for your dollar IMHO.
I wouldn't even bother with ancient ammo. The price of the old, corrosive stuff has caught up to the price of Hirtenberger which is non-corrosive, brass cased, boxer primed and reloadable.
