M-70 or ATR-100

O.K., momma told me that I'm getting a new rifle for my B-Day but I've got a $350 cap due to current financial considerations.
I've looked all over town and have it narrowed down to either a used (looks new) Win. Mod. 70 Super Shadow with a Simmons (yuck) scope for $329.95, or a new Mossberg ATR-100 with a Mossberg-marked scope which looks like a Bushnell Banner (yuck again) for $299.00. I've looked at the Stevens 200, Savage w\Accutrigger, several used guns and these are the only two that fit my parameters. BTW they're both in .270 Win. I'm leaning to the Win., but I've never bought a brand-new gun, so that's a plus for the Mossy.
Decisions, decisions....

Thanks for the input guys, I think I'll go pick it up @ lunch tomorrow. I wanted a Tikka T-3 in .25-06 that I found awhile back, but they sold it this morning before I got there.

It's an easy decision, go with the Model 70!

Well, I got it, but I was mistaken, it's not a Super Shadow. It's just a standard Mod. 70 synthetic, but I think I'm really going to like it. I'll post pics after I eat.

O.K., here's a few pics. I did determine that it's a Black Shadow version. The more I play with it, the better I like it.

I used to have an M-70 in .270win. It was that exact model with that exact same model Simmons Scope (the vertical windage cap isn't dented by chance? It had an accident once falling out of the truck).

I never liked the .270, mainly because I couldn't afford to shoot it as much as the 30-06. I wish that I still had it. I hope Winchester gets these new M70's out soon, I might get another.

I was late in seeing this, but I'd of voted for the Winchester also. Now that you have pictures of it up, very nice toolman, very nice...

Hey B, I don't think it's the same one (that'd be a hoot, tho ). I hope to go test drive it this weekend, I've already got 40 rds loaded up and a couple of boxes of factory ammo. The scope will prolly be going bye-bye very shortly, although I'm actually impressed with the clarity so far.

Thanks for asking, bro. It's still a little sore, but it wasn't as bad as expected. My hands have taken so much abuse it's not even funny, so I don't know why it surprises me when it happens.

Congrats on the new toy, Toolman! I have always had a fondness for the Winchesters. Never owned one but shot a couple and liked them. I shared your suspicion of the 270 for a long time. Now, I want one.

Not a problem there toolman. Part of being a friendly site, making friends and keeping them is to not only say things but to remember them and follow up. I would have asked about it in that post but for the life of me, I couldn't find it.

Anyhow, glad to hear it's all but healed up and you had simply a minor annoyance with use.

Talking dont think about gettin the mossy, mossy is only good with shotguns

i dont exacltly know what the M- 70 is but i can tell you that you dont want the 100 ATR cuzz its not a very hi quality gun planly just sucks the bolt handle is not as tight as higher quality bolt guns are so you can unknowinly bump the handle up just a bit an it wont fire the shell cuzz the firing pin is not cocked enough and it gets very anoyin thank God mine has yet to miss fire when i had a deer in the scope i have the same model you where looking at so good thing you did not get it mine also has the mossberg scope on it now for accuracy well i have not practice enough with it so i get bad groups with it

i have shot 2 deer with it and i seem to have the worse luck i always hit them in the back spine

and when i shot my first deer i used my dad Remington 700 25-06 and got him in the heart in one shot

Well guys, here's a mini-range report on the new Win., needless to say, I'm very happy with it. The range was only 25 yds due to high winds, but here is 8 rds fired off the roof of my wifes car with the wind gusting up to 15 mph at a right angle to my firing lane.:

Well the Winchester is a fine rifle but a savage WILL out shoot it. IF you don't want to Believe that just go to a IBS shoot and see who is winning the factory class.
