| Well...I was surprised when you titled the thread "Handgun Hunting." I did not think that you hunted.

| spiritual counselor ![]() ![]() | it is pretty hard to get 25 yards from an elk or deer and with the sights as they are i wouldnt risk a bad shot any farther.

| Handguns and hunting It is good that you are getting some info that will be of use in making a handgun hunting decision. Most handguns are just not equipped from the factory for distance shooting. A quality handgun scope is a real plus and would be a "super" plus if they had greater eye relief. Good luck and good hunting. |

| I have hunted with handguns quite a lot and always tried to stay under 50yds with open sights.Reddot,s and scopes are the way to go and give you more range but take some practice to get lined up.The only thing I dont like about them is the way you must carry them.I always considered a handgun a pull and shoot firearm. If I were going beyond 50yds I would definitely have a scope/reddot. sam. |

| Here in LA, thats Lower Ala-by God-bama, it's not uncommon to get within 25yds to 50yds from a deer, provided you are in a tree stand or shooting house or blind. I use a .357mag Ruger Blackhawk 6 1/2" barrel with a NcStar 4x32 fixed power scope mounted on a Weaver clamp on mount. Accuracy is no problem, even at 50yds. I would even feel confident taking a shot at 75yds to 100yds. You have to be familiar with the ballistics of your gun and ammo combination though. I plan on trying some of the Hornady "Flex-tip" Leverolution ammo this year. It just came out in .357mag and .44mag. It is supposed to give about 300fps more muzzel velocity and much more terminal energy than standard hunting loads. |

| Hitting the heart lung zone of the average game animal with a good open sighted handgun at 100 yards is not difficult. It takes a little practice. Punching bullseyes at 100 yards with the same setup is another story. |

| I have heard of people hunting wild boar with hand guns, since I also hear wild boar will charge at you. So, it is not really about getting with in the right distance it is about getting the right shot before the boar eats your leg. However, that is just what I have been told by some hill billies I have met and known. I don't hunt so I wouldn't know if they were pulling my leg or not. |

| Handgun Hunting- If we're talking bolt guns I've thumped a few caribou/moose/sheep/bears with my Rem XP-100 Repeaters topped w/ Leupold 2.5-8X M8's. If we're talking wheel guns I've accomplished the same with my FA Premier 10" 454 Casull topped w/Leupold 2.5-8X M8. |
