Browning Mauser Safari

I have a Browning Mauser Safari bolt action which was made in about 1965 or so. I can't seem to find the serial number on it. Would one have to take the action out of the stock to find it? I know the barrel was replaced on it, so wonder if there is any chance they would have put it on the barrel?

Number should be on the receiver. Might be on the bottom so you'll need to remove the action and have a look.

Ok, thanks. I will take it apart and look. When gun registry came in a while back I could not find it and reported that it had no serial number. The government then issued me a sticker with a number (how hard is that to remove if someone steals it...), and I really don't want to put that stupid sticker on a nice looking gun.

When the British government brought in Registry of Pump & semi-auto shotguns, they reckon at least 4 million disappeared overnight!!! I believe that is also true about Canada??

Have not heard stats, but it probably is true. For sure nobody that has illegal purposes in mind for the guns will have registered. I do know the stats for Canadian deaths by firearms as it was one of the questions on the exam I had to write to get my acquisition certificate valid again. 5% are accidental, 15% are homicides, and 80% are suicides.

One local guy made the news the other day as he went to court for making threats to our Provincial Premier over the telephone. They checked him out and he had 14 unregistered guns in a box in his basement (that he did not know he had...). Looks like he is now going to do time for the threats and the unregistered guns.

I'm actually ok with the registry, but the cost and the paperwork involved needs to be improved.

Sounds like you've got the # thing figured out. Just wanted to say... awesome rifle! I've not ever owned one, but have handled one.... very nice and a virtual clone of the FN Sako I have. I'd love to find a deal on a Safari Gr Browning though.

Took it apart today and did find the serial number on the receiver. It was stamped on the inside of the stock as well. Thanks for that. I had just convinced myself that it must have been on the barrel. Getting it changed in the registry probably will be the hard part.

I hate to admit that this gun was inherited from my father, and I have never shot it in many years. I recall reading somewhere that the shorter action models were made in Finland by Sako. This is a 264WM and I believe made in Belgium. Where it was made probably was on the original barrel.
