Talking My New M1

Last month I went to the local fun show and picked up a few new rifles. One of them I'm happy to report is this M1 Garand. Its a 1943 SA with lock bar sight and milled trigger guard. It now has a Wenig Laminiated stock and new Wilson Arms .308bbl. Midway USA is currently shipping me a new NM front sight and adjustable gas plug for it.

This is my first M1 thread here at Gun and Game!

Here's some pics:

Since your Garand seems to be custom "built" for the range you may as well get rid of the lock bar sights . While wanted by collectors they are harder to adjust than the later style

F1609, Happy B-DAY! Sorry couldn't send you a rifle!

I grew up in NW OHIO and still have lots of family there. I see most of you are from OH. Went to OSU in mid 90's and then Lived in Cleveland area for a few years and then moved out to AZ in 2001.

sell33, if your anything like me. When I was outta school I was still broke even though I was working hard. Repaying loans, credit cards, etc. But if you plan and save some you can get some of the things you want!

JPWILLY, Why are you holding that rifle like that???? A southpaw????? What's it like watching the op rod come at your face out of the corner of your eye?

When you get that gas plug remember it is set to allow the most gas expansion, then you adjust it for the ammo you intend to shoot. The explanation sent with it isn't too great. I'm not sure what happens if you set it for say 180 grain and then switch to 150, haven't tried that yet.

I installed the NM front sight last night. I had to peen the splines on the bble so the gas cylinder wouldn't wobble. It wobbled at the range that day when shooting. I also installed the Adjustable Gas Plug. The instructions were brief but the purpose is clear. As far as switching ammo, I'm sure there's a setting that will allow the 150gr to just cycle and the 180 should work a little better as it will develop better pressure. Or I can just turn out the adjustment a couple of clicks and see what happens. Apparently you can tune the harmonics of the bbl with the adjustable gas plug too - I'll find out.

As far as the op rod I don't even notice. I've always been a southpaw and every semi auto has a bolt that's on the right. The only ones that bother me are the ones that shoot blowback into my face.

Very nice!! A good looking M1 and great groups. I have the Schuster gas plug on my Springfield Inc. NM and have taken two deer with it. I did use 150 Gn SP bullets with IMR4895 powder, though and haven't shot anything heavier than a 172 gn. bullet in it.
