Best .22 LR varmint ammo

Hey yall, I got a semi-automatic .22 LR for christmas last year and was looking forward to try hunting varmints. Mostly fox and maybe a coyote here and there. I was looking to see what the best ammo would be for that type of hunting. My shots would be under 50 yards, 75 yards max. I am going to buy a bushnell 3x-9x scope for it. I have have heard good things about the cci velociters. So guys whats your take on this. I would also like to here any stories you guys have hunting varmints with a .22 LR.

Find the ammo that shoots most accurately in your rifle. This is usually not hyper-velocity ammo.

Yep, it's all about 'shot placement' - not what style or weight of bullet used. Let your gun tell what it likes best!

I tend to be more in favor of sub-sonic loads myself. But never tried them on anything larger then a skunk...

There is that too. .22's are all going to be accurate little buggers. I have no problem going small game hunting with "whatever I grabbed off the shelf."

I've hunted with Federal bulk ammo in the past. It shoots under an inch at 50 yards. Since I don't hunt with the .22LR beyond 50 yards, it's perfect.

Dunno anything about the velociters, but for many years, CCI/Stingers did the best in terms of velocity from either rifle or pistol, they were the first hyper-velocity .22 and even after other companies came out with their own version, they didn't quite equal the Stinger. Worked good in all three of my autoladers. The Stinger was the sensation of it's day, with a slightly longer case than the .22LR but the bullet lighter/shorter and seated to be the same OAC length, it's actually a different cartridge than the standard .22LR. I don't think anyone else gave their hyper-vel .22's the same treatment in terms of extending the case.

I would vote cci velcitor. Better than the stinger because it has a heavier bullet. I still would not use it on coyotes!

Not trying top be smart , but save your money and get your self a 22WMR for varmints yote size. the 22lr is under powered. It's a great squirrel gun and groundhogs ,but bigger game need a step up. Now i'm sure some one is gonna say ,so ans so shot a deer with his 22lr..etc. yada yada yada that still don't make it the correct gun. you will be very happy with a nice bolt 22WMR bullet weights from 30 to 50 gns. humming out at up to 2200-2300 FPS ,,,,,now don't ya just want one?? ck out he shops for a used one.... Hang in there.--JMJ--

Taking a deer with a 22 doesnt mean its the correct gun, it means you are a poacher. My grandfather poached deer with a 22, my dad poached gators with a 22.
