The hornet would be a great round to use, as would a lot of others. For those 50 yard shots, I would drag out my marlin lever in 25-20 win. If I was reaching for the 100 yard shot or more, a 222 rem, in an old mohawk. Would I try it with a 17 or 22 mag, yes. I don't take a shot that I don't have confidence I can make. I practice, and know each of my guns well. If your area is becomeing more and more built up, you will have to worry more and more about where the bullets might end up. Any bullet can ricochet, and also pass through and keep going. A shot gun can be more challenging, your target will need to be a bit closer, but you don't have to worry as much.
