so i was bored today and looked up my stamps on my mosin. i learned the one i am currently building is a 1940 (izthk) or something thats spelled like that. though i dont know how to pronounce it. i know it was one of the major soviet union factorys. i knew how to look up mosins from browsing on 7.62x54r.net but just thought to find mine out of curiousity. it has nothing to do with my build just thought it would be cool to find out.

The first thing is to bed the barrel, either in a new ATI synthetic stock or in the existing stock. Louie, my local Mosin Kahuna, maintains the best bedding for a M-N is a latex sealant normally used to seal bathtub surrounds. You squeeze it into the stock and seat the barrel into it. Once it sets up, it dampens the firing vibration to make the platform steadier.

The next thing is to lose the dog collar sling and replace it with sling swivels that will take a modern shooting sling. This will further stabilize the platform when you go to shoot a round.

Next thing is to get your rifle slugged to find out the precise bore diameter. This in turn will tell you what kind of ammunition to buy for it, presuming you don't handload. Mosin ammo varies not only by projectile weight, but also by bullet diameter over a range of about 6/1000ths depending on where and when it was manufactured. Knowing which kind of ammunition to load in your Russian Doll for best performance will do a lot more than it sounds like.

That's the simple stuff. Now we get into details. Are you going to be using a scope? If a scope, are you planning to use a scout mount, a custom Mosin scope mount or a Soviet type sniper mount? Which scope will you use? You get the idea. And don't forget about having the bolt handle bent by a machinist or a proper gunsmith, not bubba'd with one of those nasty ATI screw-on bent bolt handles.

If you are planning to keep her in iron sights, you can tweak the front sight. Folks on the forum have talked about everything from painting the front sight to filing it a tad. And of course you can drift it to move your point of impact a little left or right.

One thing that's almost a given for long range work is a better trigger. Numrich Gun Parts Corporation sells a Huber Concepts adjustable, anti-friction, ball bearing match trigger, Item No. 932140, for about $75.00 that will go a long way toward improving your accuracy. Supposedly, you don't need a gunsmith to install it for you. You may also want to replace the striker spring and the firing pin spring. Between Numrich and Wolff Gunsprings, you should have no trouble getting the parts. The Blitzschnell striker spring made by Wolff is supposed to be especially good. If you could find or have made a titanium firing pin for your Mosin, that would speed up lock time and would help your accuracy, too.

It's just a question of how much you want to spend, and how quickly you choose to spend it. Apart from the scope (if you go that way), the most expensive item on the list is the Huber match trigger. I think your question is answered. You can indeed fine-tune your Mosin for long distance shooting.
Cyrano, this is all great info, thank you. One question, could you tell me why bending the bolt handle would be important, aside from an aesthetic viewpoint or ergonomic advantage? Believe it or not, I kinda like the look of the straight bolt hanging out there. Matches the empty bayonet lug on my M44.

And one comment, titanium FP're are really a waste of $. Believe me, I have a whole drawer full of BOPOS rooney parts, and this qualifies. You want something steel and with a lot of inertia whacking that rim. I tried to buy one some years ago from the mfr of my AR rifle for that rifle, he sells them, but he told me privately to save my $ and after a lot of later research I see no reason to doubt him. A stronger FP spring will have better effect if lock time is a concern, otherwise I think the difference could only be measured in milliseconds.

The match trigger and springs look like great mods. (Wait a sec!, does the 91 have a striker spring and the M44 not? I only see a FP spring on my M44.)

Tnx.

Norm

The bolts have exactly the same parts for each model.

You don't need to bend the bolt if you go with a scout scope setup. If you buy a Huber trigger, buy directly from them. Huber Concepts You'll save on the shipping. And they'll give you $10 for your old trigger if you are so inclined.

Slugging your barrel should be the first thing you do. This really works well and is very easy to do: Mosin Nagant Rifle Bore Slugging Tutorial I tell people, knowing your bore is the only way to get the best accuuracy out of the rifle.

In addition to slugging the barrel, you can do what the NRA publication Handloading Handloading mentions and use http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=462291 to do both a muzzle/barrel cast and a chamber cast, which gives you exact dimensions of your bore exit diameter and of your chamber plus the lands and grooves that that ogive encounters (plus tells you how deep to seat the bullet to have the ogive right at the start of the rifling).

Thanks! Somewhere I've misplaced a spring! I just saw the big FP spring in there. Changing them out is a good idea after this many decades.

And I appreciate the info on the trigger (something I'm sure to do) and on slugging the barrel. (Don't know that I would be able to get milsurp ammo to those exact specs though...)

Despite the high-comb of the ATI stock, offhand my inclination is not to scope it. I think it might the perfect iron-sight knock around rifle.

I read those things in context to the message (I'm 26) and sometimes it means In My Honest Opinion and sometimes it means In My Humble Opinion. It can also depend on the person using the acronym... it's all about context, baby!

If I wanted to build a extreme Mosin-Nagant, and I have to admit that it sounds fun, I'd go the extra step and get a Douglas straight taper or Shilen bull barrel blank from Brownells in 7mm and chamber it for a 7.62 case with a 7mBR neck and shoulder.
Just food for thought (and wishing I had the money to do it myself).

Svash- If you have the FP spring, what spring are you missing?????? There IS a wide range of bullet diameters in milsurp ammo.
Marion-I passed "fuddy" years old a long time ago. I have been "duddy" minded for quite some time. 26 year old socks, and never been washed! LOL
JAC- Don't you never mind them! It took me 52 years to find this place, and you did it in half the time!

No worries, SS, Chris is 3 years younger than I am. So, you couldn't have found it at least until he touched a computer.

You did not know how old he was, Marion. You were too busy trying to find where you put that pair of 18 year old socks.
