| I had a "fooom, whoosh, fwap" and some smoke yesterday.
I was still shooting my CVA Wolf, but strictly with BP and balls. I had shot three rounds, adjusting the sights as I like them, and I had been swabbing the barrel between shots with a damp rag. THe last time got too damp, ... A little smoke and such came out the end of the barrel after a mild noise. I waited and then took the breech plug out of the CVA Wolf (thank God for breech plugs). I was surprised to see the barrel empty except for the crud. I ran a patch through and put it back together. I couldn't find the errant ball and it worked fine with a barely damp patch (pretty cruddy rag). I had never experienced anything like that. Anyone else have a misfire? This thing is really fun to shoot, but I was not looking forward to removing the ball from that barrel! Probably, a fired 209 cap fired between loads would have dried it enough, but I had to learn. I had a misfire once when the flash hole got really dirty, but thats it. I always run a dry patch after my damp one.

I will never swab the barrel with a wet patch...Dry only between shots if at all...You experienced damp powder, lucky it went off at all... Rich

I had a misfire once. They are NOT fun. Mine was due to a clogged flash hole as well. I let her sit for a good long time before taking the ball out. Even with her sitting for almost 15 minutes, I was still scared stiff taking that ball out. Learned to clean the flash hole a lot after that.

I once seated a minie ball too firmly on the powder. I always snap a couple of caps and burn a blank or two before loading a ball. However, after the last day of the hunting season I touched it off: the cap snapped...nothing (not even a sizzle)...nothing (but I've heard of "hang fire")...BANG!

I have had a misfire before. The flashhole got to dirty. I use a pipcleaner on it once in a while. Cleans it right out. If the barrel is damp with oil now that is fun! Not Really! Bang ssszzzzz (looks like a tracer)

I have experienced that proverbial "flash in the pan" once or twice in the many years I have toted a flintlock. In nearly every case picking the touch hole and repriming took care of the problem. But, however, I have also pulled a charge on a rare occasion. It's not a big deal, really. Of course some recommend soaking the still charged barrel in water to insure a completely inert charge. I've never felt a need to go to that extreme. Pull the ball (not nearly as easy as loading), dump the charge, reprime and refire (just to make sure), clean, reload and give it another go. I've not left a ball down a barrel yet. msj
