| Senior Member | Your home defense "bases"... I've read you should have more than one "base" or "line" of defense. What do you all think? Burglar alarms, firearms, dogs, etc. Here are my bases: First base. An overly protective American Akita... ![]() Second base. An old sawed off SxS hanging over the bedroom door. Loaded with #1B... ![]() Third base. A .45 in the nightstand loaded with Federal Hydrashok... ![]() Fourth base. Well...if one through three fails, I'm screwed. I better call somebody. ![]() *The idea for this thread is a combination of Squirrelbaster's "Which shot size" thread and a thread about firearm bases from thr.org. Just giving props where props is due.

| Senior Member ![]() | I have an alarm, however, my dog is my first line of defense. He can hear the neighbors cat coming down the sidewalk. He's not viscious, just hears really well. Backup is a Sig.

| Senior Member | IMO, that's what counts. A dog giving early warning. Burglar alarms are great. But dogs can give earlier warning and don't have 'off switches.'

| Senior Member | Dang! If you've got Chuck Norris in your house, nuff said. You can rest easy. Me however, all I have as a first line of defense is my blood thirsty attack cat, Cloud. Don't let her name fool you. She's 6 lbs of furry death!

| Senior Member | Nothing can beat the keen ears of a dog. Their barking not only alerts you of potential danger, but scares any intruder away, saving you from having to shoot them and doing all that paperwork at the police station. But for people like me who can't have one, I'll just have to depend on a fine selection of handguns, shotguns, and rifles to do the barking for me. | Member | Ive got a very loud, and alert Chow lab mix. I have a mossberg Maverick with the plug taken out with 5 00 bucks ready to go and 5 #6 shot turkey loads riding on the stock. If it comes to It I have my remington model 7400 270 with 4 shells in the clip awaiting use. My dad with his remington 870, and assorted hanguns and what not. And a fine assortment of knives placed around the house. |
