| NEF rifles any good?
How do you feel about the single shot NEF in 7mm-08 as a first rifle? It will possibly be used by my son for a cow elk hunt this year?

Darn good rifle. Well made. Solid with a good company behind it. Plus, if ever you want to change calibers H&R has a barrel program where you can purchase another barrel for about 100 bucks. Very versatile, accurate rifle. I am looking for one now myself.

The one I'm looking at cost 287.00 with a 3x9 simmons scope and mounts. It also looks like it has a birch stock.

A complete hunting outfit for under $300 new? Sounds good to me. There is nothing wrong with a birch stock. Birch is a tough hardwood - not a pretty as walnut but just as strong. |

I just seen another at impact guns for 297.00 with a laminated birch stock and a cheap scope, 26" barrel in 25-06. The price seems a little steep to me. I think the 25-06 would be too small for elk though.

I have no problems with the gun, but I would get a better scope. I know of 2 guys who had real problems with Simmons. It maybe ok on a .22 but on an elk hunt you want something dependable. Makes no sense to spend the money to hunt elk, just to chance something going wrong with the scope.

I've got the Handi Rifle in .22-250, 7mm-08, .30/06, .357 mag., and .45-70. I just love them. They've proven very accurate and reliable. There's a lot of support available at Graybeard Outdoors, gbo.com, H&R/NEF Talk. A wealth of info, and good people. Hope to see you there. I don't know your son's age, size and weight, but the .308 doesn't kick a heck of a lot more than the 7mm-08, and may give better penetration and performance over distance. I use my 7mm for whitetails. Last edited by petemi; 04-08-2008 at 04:41 PM. |

Good and cheap guns, I don't mind a single shot personally.

I have the H&R Handi 223. Had an issue with the breach opeing upon firing and the trigger pull needed a come along to break. Sent it back & they squared everything away no questions asked. Great Cust service.

Another thought just occurred to me. I think single shots over the years have made me a better rifleman. I believe it's a good thing to teach a kid...one shot, make it good.

High quality firearms. One way to look at it, as I was once told, all rifles are single shots in that so very often you only get one good shot at game. This is an interesting point of view. I agree a single shot will make you take the time for greater accuracy in your shooting. |

Make it three guys that have had problems with simmons. Had one on a 30-06 that would not adjust at all.

My son has one in .30-06 that he likes. The trigger let off is different and I always shoot high with'm. I could likely have learned the trigger but just never shot it that much.
