what to look for?

I just called up a local gun store and they have a couple of German Mausers in stock for $325. The price is a bit high for me but considering that everything is negotiable in the world we live in, I'll try to find a way around that. That being said, what should I be looking for in these rifles? The guy on the phone claimed that they had all been reworked. Should I be looking for matching numbers? Any specific peculiarities that I should be aware of when looking at Mausers? Can the date of manufacture be found anywhere on the weapon? Any desirable dates? Also, what is a good deal when it comes to a German Mauser? I know it depends on the condition and everything but can someone shoot me with some ball park figures?

I promised myself to study some organic chemistry before I go so I'll check back here in an hour or two and hopefully I will have some responses and some ideas to work with when I head out the door!
