Here is a generic pic of CCI's shot shells. If you read the fine pring on CCI's website it says
"40 S&W and 45 Auto shotshells use an extended case design without a capsule, and are not intended for revolvers. "

Maybe that is what it is?

The primer is rounded at the corners, like it wasn't touching the bolt unlike the normal one that has a flat primer from the bolt face. and it does not protrude any more than the other case.

This is the bad one it's rounded like it wasn't really touching the bolt face. and it seems to have burst.

This is the good one notice how the primer is flat from the bolt face.

Zeph- Look closely and see if indeed the "long" case isn't a portion of another case? If not, then it has to be shotshell.

It's not a portion of another case, the 'neck' is physically part of the case. I'm going to email cci and ask them about this oddity.

Been a long time since I've seen one, but a shotshell is the best theory yet on what it could be.

I think the A is a rip in the primer.

Maybe the bullet was seated to far down from racking the gun to many times with the same cartridge, and this is what happens when it "doesn't" blow up ?

The bottom picture looks double tapped too...A.H

Here are 2 shotshells flanking a round of hardball. You can see how much the case is lengthened in the shotshell compared to the regular case.

Yup, definitely CCI Shotshell. The normal blue plastic cases don't feed well in autoloaders.
