Elk Hunters, how and where did you do it?

For those that have taken Elk in the field, how and where did you do it?

Rifle(s), caliber(s), bullet(s), shot distance(s) and area(s) you hunted?

Please be accurate with the details, but feel free to take liberty while filling in the rest of the story.

A WWII Mk IV 303. British Leenfield. 180 grain federals. About 150 yards. The area was a forested quarter. We had seen the herd go in that morning but could not get a clear shot at any. The next night we went in and i took a cow. Was a nice hunt. FIRST DAY OF THE SEASON. Probobly the first and last time that will happen. Concerning the cal and such i think now that i was slightly underpowered. Thats why i am promoting the use of magnums as it took more than one shot...

Sako .308; Redfield 3x9x40 WFLP; 180 gr SPBT, about 200m, S.Central WA; 1974; 8pt; last light; Priceless! I had ate one LRRP a day for the last 6 days! Ate about 4 lbs of venison that night! I think I was JUST by the Ginford Pinchot. Mine are UNDER the house, BUT, I have a small books with all the details, pics and companion notes on each hunt! PLEASE! Start one with your child. I have 3 with my son! They are truly priceless!

Browning SS Stalker- (LH) in 300 Win mag-Leupold 3.5X10 scope--180 gr Nosler partitions-72 gr R19 -CCI 250 primer--Ranges have varied from 75- to about 300-hunted in NM- MT- ID- WY-co-- on own and with guide--do not particularily like ranch or P/U hunts--I like horse back wilderness tent camp hunts.-This year going guided in ID out of Warren.

CZ 550, 9.3X62, Leupold 2X7X40, 250 gr. Noslers in front of a handfull of Varget. I mostly hunt the southwestern part of Washington State, but sometimes venture to other places.

Just outside of Montrose CO, 375 yds Remington 700 .308. 165 gr hornady spbt. 6x6 dropped on the first shot. I was amazed. I have seen elk shot with .300wm that ran. Pure luck in my favor but hey.........Ill take it.

North of Strawberry Resivor UT, Remington 700 .243 win, Leupold VXI, with 100 gr remington corelokt. distance 120-150 yds single shot broadside on a spike bull. Sun had just started to rise on opening day had walked maybe 1/4 mile from camp when I shot him. That was the first one I ever shot.

I was a lucky guy that got a Colorado liscense me and guide went for 7 days on the last day I shot a good 6x6 at a ranged 476 yds with my .338 Remington Ultra Magnum Model 700 with a 225 Gr. Hornady ST (i think or is it SP... has red tip) wouldn't have taken the shot if i hadn't had a clear shot and a bipod bullet entered base of neck on the left side and came out behind the right shoulder exit hole was about the size of a large grapefruit. The bullet liquified elks lungs and heart. Elk dropped in it's tracks.
