I doubt I am the only one that feels this way, but I think cammo and spending lots of money on it is a waste. I have killed 2 wall hanger whitetail after sitting in a smokey bar,(I dont smoke), drinking a few beers and then sitting in a open tripod 6' off the ground while wearing blue denim pants and shirt. I regularly kill hogs with a .45 colt in a like tripod, I have turkey within a few feet of me,javelinas, coyotes anything in South Texas. our ancestors had to get within a few feet of game and I doubt they smelled too good. as long as the wind is in your favor, no sudden movements, cammo to me is a waste, someone is making lots of money. I know guys that spend hundreds on cammo and then go sit in a box blind, or wear cammo and have to wear hunter orange over it. I think it's a joke. to each his own I guess but I can spend my money on other things guns, guns and cold beer.

Felix, we wear blaze orange up here as well. All the years I hunted in South Texas I never wore camo either. I think for the most part it is a fashion statement. However, when I am hunting turkeys or waterfowl camo is mandatory. That is, unless you are in a good blind. Every time I came home from the wetlands with out a goose last year it was because I was hunting with someone who was not wearing camo. I could see the geese coming then at about 1/4 mile away they would see the guy in Khakis and turn away. Deer, as stated above, look for movement and smell. Keep the wind in your favor and be still and you will keep getting the results you have been having. Congrats on the wall hangers! I sure miss South Texas hunting!

Here in Texas it is still in the 80's well into deer season and I wear T's sometimes too and they aint cammo. I am also guilty of drinking beer in my stand be it tripod or box stand. I shot 2 boars monday nite and it was 88 degrees and the beer sure tasted good. I know the "guns and acohol dont mix" but I am 54, have been hunting by myself for 46 years and always respect any firearm, sometimes to double and triple checking. it is no problem taking a whizz from a tripod.

I'll have to agree. When I've gone (not for years now, unfortunately) I never bothered with camo. It is mostly movement and scent that'll do you in for stuff like rabbits and pigs. I wore dark colours, usually an overcoat to keep warm. I couldn't say much about deer, but I have no reason to assume otherwise. I've been able to get within 50 feet or so of deer in the Santa Cruz mountains. Not hunting, just looking. Also, texnmidwest is totally right about birds being another matter entirely. Almost all birds have full-colour vision at least as good as if not better than ours, while most mammals have only partial colour or "greyscale" vision. - Coeloptera |

I have clothes that I use for hunting, mainly so I don't get my civvies all bloodied up. (I wear civvies to and from a hunt, so that people don't know what I've been doing, or where I've been doing it.) I just fugured if I'm gonna buy special clothes anyway cammo would help me out in the bush.

i thought hunting and drinking alcohol was illegal? is it? or just not the best thing to do. And if you were just takin a sip and accidentally shot a kid, would you be in serious trouble? Don't think that's the best thing to be posting on here if you ask me, kinda plays into the whole drunken redneck with a gun in the woods persona ya know.

It is Cammo-up here in Arizona too. Deer, elk, and even the coyotes can pick you out if your in your street clothes. ALSO EXCELLENT POINT MADE BY WILDCAT, THEY WILL EAT YOU ALIVE IF YOU MAKE A MISTAKE WITH ALCOHOL, THAT IS JUST WHAT THE ANTI'S ARE LOOKING FOR..

I wear earth-toned clothes mostly. Browns, tans, olive. Movement, or rather lack of movement is the key. I have shot javelina in my underwear too. I know, I know. What was the javelina doing in my underwear?

when i go shooting i have to bang on the bed of my gator to get the deer to leave so i don't scare them with the gun shots. and as for as camo is concerned i think deer only see in black/white thats why they rely on movements and smell the only thing camo will do is make you blend into the tree better and hide your little movements but as for as complete concealment you don't need it to deer hunt just sit still with some blue jeans and your fine thats what i wear in the woods. now i don't hunt and the deer kinda know that i don't mean them no harm thats why they won't run from me when i show up with my gator.

after googleing it i came up with the fact that they see in black/white but mostly in just shades of grey so really cammo only makes you fit in with the other hunters and it really don't hide you from the deer .movement hides you from the deer.

Before Camo I wore blue jeans and a dark shirt or a dark jacket But for the past several years I wear Mossey Oak camo and I wear Scent blocker. As long as your outline is blocked or broken up you can wear anything you want to. But I do beleive in scent blocker sprays and detergents and will argue all night long that it works. Also Camo is COOL looking LOL ! |
