Just thought I would show what Dawn Power Desolver can do. The 91/30 stock took 3 applications (about 45 minutes) to completely remove all varnish and cosmolene.

I love this stuff... I suggest wearing gloves. Pleasent smell, but really caustic. Spray on, rub in with brush, let set 10 min, then rinse with warm water. Repeat as needed. Very easy. Let dry for 24 hours (Arizona)... 48 hours (non-desert). This one will get red mahogany... I'll post pics of the finished rifle asap.

Nope. Will be here on the 15th. Seems that the 111 guys can't follow directions, even with back-up calls and e-mails.

Since they are planning to go on-line.. they need to get their sh#t together.

Hopefully they sent the right rifle... I'm starting to have my doubts.

I do thank you though for finding these.

Nope it takes the paint off as well (very easy to redo). Also notice... not a trace of cosmolene in the barrel bed or action cutout.

Looks good so far, Geo!

Could you keep this thread updated with pics of the results and maybe a short step-by-step (for us noobs) listing materials used, etc.? I'm interested in seeing (pardon the pun) the finished product.

I'm looking to refinish one of my 91/30s because its shellac finish is all flaky and needs to be redone with something nice.

Thanks.

Have you used easy off before? And if you have which one is better?

Nope. Dawn Power Desolver just seemed like a less dangerous solution. Easy off is probably easier to find. The only place I've seen DPD recently is Wally World.

I've had no luck in finding DPD. Would like to try it, just another option, EZ Off works great. As does acetone and MS. The dawn would seem a bit friendlier. Once had a girlfriend named Dawn too, so it would be sentimental! Well, wait a minute, I had a girlfriend named EZ-Off too...

So I spent a couple of hours sanding, and then stained the stock with Minwax RED MAHOGANY. Started with the orbital palm sander and 150 grit paper, then sanded out the grooves by hand and finished with 220 fine foam backed sandpaper. The more time you spend detail sanding (and tack wiping in between, the better.

Here is the resutl so far. I will put on two coats of rubbed satin poly tomorrow. The Red Mahogany gave me a closer match to the handguard which (like many MN's) is Mahogany.

Pictures?.... of course.First 3 are sanded, then next are stained.

Personally, I name my firearms after a trip to the range and at least one full magazine of ammo through 'em. That way, I can get a feel for the character of the firearm.

Sometimes it's taken 5 or 6 trips to the range for the girl to speak to me... I guess they just like to play hard to get.
