Yeah. That would be "something"... but it isn't.

Yup. I had a feeling that Shooters humor would confuse the issue but I was hoping the pictures would help.

Basically original stocks for M38's and early M44's should not have the rear barrel band cutout on the stock.

For M91/30 I'm not sure when the barrel band cutouts were implemented. If anyone knows...

... Chime-in, as I just know the progression for carbines... or at least I think I know.

Actually the so called "Stock repair" is not a repair job I found out in research.
They were built that way for added strength for cold weather...If you look at the wood, it doesnt match the grain, so it didnt break and was glued and doweled back on...They were made that way for a reason !

Yep, that was the point I was making. But thought I couldn't see an actual repair splice. Also, this allowed for a smaller stock blank to begin with. If you take your buttplate off you can tell if it was an original, or a repair.

So similar to the M39 splice...

You guys are a terrific resource. Thanks.

I have heard this m38 stock debate every since I bought my first rifle!! If it was built with a m44 stock at the factory doesnt it make it correct?? If it was built at the factory with a cut out doesnt it make it correct You get my point?? the orignal design I argee had no cut out and no bayo groove but it dont make it correct !! It makes it correct to design only.. The word correct is confusing to a lot of newer collectors as well as some of us older ones. Now I will go to my corner

I know what you are saying Marion. What they mean is that when the m38s were refurbished the arsenal did not have m38 stocks so when they restocked the rifles they put on the abundant but proper sized stock...the m44. I think where "correct" comes into play is that there is a difference between one that fits and the one that was designed for the rifle. The one that was designed for it is the correct style stock.

What surprises me is that I do not hear anything about 91/59s sporting m44 stocks. Are they the wrong dimentions?

You may come out of your corner now. That was a good point and comment.

I'm too tired (lucky for you) to rehash this debate. Go to you know where and spend some time reading up on stock deviations. Also, if you look at production time lines, it should clear it all up. I have to get ready to go celebrate my youngest's 18th birthday!!! YeeHaw! I woke her up this A.M. with a birthday card and a suitcase, LOL! She kept the card, and gave me back the luggage!!!! Bummer!

Oh, OK. Then I see your point.

Swede, That is a wonderful day!!! Congrats on almost surviving the teen years! I am still struggling. Pray for me...I have a 15 year old that is trying to kill me. Yes, she is a girl. The boys at 15 were MUCH easier. Funny thing is that when they DO accept that luggage after a couple weeks you want them and that luggage to come back home.

Well... I thought I had it figgerd out, as far as the carbines go, and the barrel band slot as being a later addition.

I bow to the experts.

I've already been through 3 teen year adventures, actually getting progressively better, except "the dark years" with my daughter.
The youngest just hit the quarter century mark and all is well with all... for now.

It does get better... eventually.

The dinner went well, all had a great time. They embarassed her by singing to her. I love it! LOL! She asked for $ over gifts. She got plenty. I gave her a choice; a Mosin M44 or $100. She thought about it for quite some time and settled on the cash. I asked her why she had to think about it. She said "if I had a Mosin, and if someone proposed to me, I could give him a Mosin as an engagement gift!" Now you wanna talk sneaky! Talk about entrapment, LOL!
