Boresnakes

What do you guys put on your boresnakes before running them through the bore of your .22 Right now I start with Hoppies 9 and wash it and then use Rem oil.

Same as you. Real light on the oil. Just a drop on the snake.

Yep, otherwise you get way to much oil. I drop the part between the black string and the brass brush in Hoppies 9 then pull it out and wait for it to stop dripping and run it through the bore.

Ditto. The Boresnake is not a substitute for routine cleaning. It does not do anything for fouling in the action. And very little for lead/copper build-up in the bore. It's function is tempoary measure to remove burnt power fouling in the bore in between cleanings.

True but I have one gun that the bolt won't come off so it is all I can use.

unless you wash it between every single pull thru the barrel, you are pulling crud right back thru the barrel, especially with a 22.

Personally, I use Gun Sav'R CLP cleaner, lube, protector all in one. First I run Hoppes #9 down the barrel on a patch, then dry patch until clean and dry. Then soak the boresnake with the Gun Sav'R CLP and run it through once or twice, depending on how the bore looks after the first pass.

If the firearm is going to be up for a while, I'll run a patch with Gun Sav'R down it to put and extra coat of oil in/on the bore...

I've been using both the Gun Sav'R CLP and boresnakes for a few years now. I'm a stickler when it comes to keeping things in pristine condition. If this didn't work, trust me, I'd find something else until I did find something that worked and lived up to my standards like this does.

There are a ton of gun cleaning, lubing and protection products on the market today. You ask 5-10 people and they'll give you 5-10 different products to try because they work great. And all 5 will be telling you the truth. All 5 will work as they say. You just have to find what works for YOU. Good Luck.

If you oil up the barrel you really should clean that out before you shoot it. I don't want to be bothered and am quite confident there is enough chrome in the stainless to keep it from rusting.

And to the question by another about fouling, I think .22 barrels look much worse than they really are. They don't have the guilding metal jackets to copper foul, and I really don't think lead fouling is a big issue either. I think a pull through of the boresnake from the chamber toward the muzzle every 100-300 rounds is fine.

I think the biggest harm done to .22 rimfire barrels is by the guy cleaning it.

I've not seen it in the guns I have. It is possible if the stainless quality is not as good as it should be, and the stainless supplier has not put enough chrome in it (<12%). Steel with more than 12% chrome will not rust in normal conditions. Longer term in salty water may cause an issue. 416 stainless is commonly used for gun parts and in particular barrels. Some info on it here. It should have from 12-14% chrome if within specs.

Stainless Steel - Grade 416

I agree! I use a bore snake with r-f glaze about every 200 rounds.

Stainless parts will rust, given the right conditions.

I use a bit of spray on solvent near the brushes and then use a patchworm to clear out any stuff the boresnake leaves behind. Then a oily patch and a dry patch, wipe the outside down and I'm done.
