Anything to look for?

...when buying a Yugo SKS?
My local gun shop has quite a few Yugo SKS rifles for all about the same price, and they all look pretty nice. Anything specific I should look for, for collectability and shootability? Anything really.

look at the of the bayonet , as far as collectability the "as new" will be the one to get , shooter grades are mostly the same , bright shiny bores are a plus

just check it over pretty good before you purchase it, ask if you can take out the gas piston rod and check it over for any damages. Not sure about yugos being collectors, they seem to be pretty plentiful and cheap, at least for right now, I'm sure someone else will have some more information for you.

Get a bore light and check the bore ! Yugos dont have the chrome rifling .. and of course pick out the best one hehe
Yugos at this time arent really collector items just good shooters

this is just MY opinion, look for a non yugo! get a norinco or a russian, youll be happyer in the long run. heres why i say this, yugos dont have chromed barrels, yugos are heavier, yugos are longer, yugos have a useless gernade louncher which is just one more thing to couse problems. and to end ill say this..... a yugo sks is way better than no sks!!

All good information to consider. I might start looking for a Russian and see what happens. Both the Russian and Norinco have chromed barrels??

I would like to add to squirrel's post. While what he said is true, the grenade launcher screws on and thus can be screwed off. The grenade launcher sights also can be removed. Then you can screw on another muzzle break or just a cap to cover the thread and you will have a SKS very similar to a Russian or Norinco in length and weight. However, as he said, Yugo does not have a chrome lined barrel and so there will be the issue of corrosion is it isn't cleaned and it will wear out sooner(which unless you shoot thousands of rds a month doesn't really make that much of a difference). A Yugo is more likely to be more accurate though. The steel is easier to shape properly than chrome and because of that the rifling is more uniform when manufactured. Bottem line, each has cons and pros. I wish my Norinco was more accurate than it is, but it isn't. So far I've seen more people report good groups with Yugo's than with Chinese SKSs. Russians are better than both.

As long as you clean the bore, and keep a coating a good oil on/in it, the fact it isn't chromed isn't that big of a deal. To me anyhow. I would buy a Norinco if I could find one. Not because I think it's better or anything. Just to have/own one is all. lol

FWIW, some of the Yugo model 59/66 can be found as unissued. Those do generally cost a tad bit more.

i personaly think that norincos are better, but its becouse of the things i listed above. if they dont bother you then no problem!
its realy personal prefrence. a simple, short and light rifle is just the way i want it. so the extra weight and length arnt for me....

you can buy a yugo for about half of what a russian will cost you .. a norinco will cost you about a 1/3 more
As Glock said the barrel shouldnt matter that it isnt chrome I only suggest that if you buy a used yugo look at the bore before you buy a lotta rifles arent taken care of in this old world!

Definately. I haven't never bought a rifle that hasn't had a clean bore.
I am considering the Russian route now, however, because collecting is just as important to me as shooting. I would really love to have an SVT40, but since those are a touch more expensive, I figure one of these would be easier to buy first.

I Russian will run you around $400+ but it'll be worth it. If you have the money, do it!

$400?!?! only $300 around here. with prices like that its no wander you dont care about the minor cons of the yugo!

Well I haven't checked gunstores around here(mainly because the nearest is 40 miles away). That price is based off the regular price charged on Gunbroker. If you go to a pawnshop you could probably find better prices.

2 things -- chromed line barrel and screwed in barrel, not pinned.
Picked up my unissued Russian 8 years ago for $150.00. I didn't realise they were that expensive now.

i find gunbroker to have realy high prices compared to my local gunshows and shops on pritty much everything. only reason i see to use gunbroker is to find thing that are not avalable(sp?) in ones area.
