Personally, I like the .30-06 better than the .308. It's actually a more accurate cartridge. I don't think you will find a better all around cartridge. When the Army and Marine Corps were testing cartridges and calibers for the development of a bolt action sniper rifle they almost went with the .30-06. I would have to get back into my books to find exactly why they changed their mind.

If you are going to select a rifle for long range hunting, be sure to determine what the of the bullet is at the approximate point of impact. On deer I personally prefer at least 2000 ft lb of energy. I have been frequently accused of being fond of cannons, but a lot has to be said that I don't have to chase any of them after they have been hit. With that in mind, choose your weapon (I personally prefer .300WM), sight it in at a proper range, and practice, practice, practice. When you get proficient, practice some more! Good Hunting to you!

But Hathcock was basically using an off the shelf hunting rifle, a model 70 if I remember right. It wasn't until after Vietnam that the US military saw the need for a well developed longe range rifle. It was then that they tested several rifles and calibers and settled on the Remington Model 700 in .308 as the platform for the current M24 and M40. Prior to that they just basically ordered hunting rifles off the shelves, or put a scope on an M-14 (M21) or M-1C and D.

If you enjoy reading about snipers, books that I enjoyed are One Shot, One Kill, a collection of sniper stories from all the various wars that America has fought in, and Trigger Men, a general history of sniping in the US military. I can't remember the authors of either one, but both are available at Barnes and Noble. I have two rifles in .30-06; a Garand and a M98 Mauser and I like both of them. They are both MOA rifles out to 800 yards with very little work, and they are good for everything from varmint hunting to big game hunting and target shooting.

That "I must have hit a nerve" thing...that's such a tired and juvenile internet tactic. Tells me a lot about you. People that think they gain some advantage in a debate by claiming to have "hit a nerve"...they're pathetic! And you're arrogant and pompous to boot. Hit a nerve? Please! A whack in the head with a brick hits a nerve...you're nothing more than a popcorn fart! By the way, I hunt to enjoy the outdoors and watch the animals. I hunt for fun, and sport. I rarely actually pull the trigger. I'm not sure what relevance that has to any of this. Last edited by .280Rem; 04-16-2008 at 06:56 PM. | |

A 6mm Br or 243 are both exellent rounds and both are very acurate out to 600 yds. Both are used for long range target out to 1000yds in F class comp. As for hunting 243 is a good deer round I have killed numerous deer out to 250 to 300 yds making clean kills and light damage to meat. I am a meat hunter and I hunt several states for Whitetail and Mule deer so I have deer meat most of the yr. The 243 is a good all round round for small to medium game. I have had my 243 for 12 yrs and its been great and BTW it is a Mod 700 with a 22 inch barrel and a Simmons 6x24 40mm on top.
