new guy questions for saiga

So I was at the gun show this weekend lookin around, and I ended up buying a saiga (7.62X39). From what I have seen, most of these come with a montecarlo type stock. This one came with what I will call a skeleton stock (thats what its called at some sights that sell saiga items). It has a cheek rest on it that seems useless. made for using a scope maybe? Does anyone have one of these? I am new to rifles, and this one seems to have a rail on the left side. Is that normal? It looks like something I can use to put on a side mount scope or something. Can anyone recomend a good place to get the mount and scope? What type of scope would you recomend? I will only really be able to shoot from 1-200 yards. Also a high cap mag? 30 rd maybe? I appreciate any help you can give!

Thanks,
Sean

The rail on the side is for a scope mount like this.

As far as the stock, the skeleton stock is not factory, and in my personal opinion, are junk. A lot of people like them, just not me. I think that you are a lot better off with iron sights on a Saiga, but the Saiga is one the most accurate AK platforms. If you are leaning towards optics a red dot maybe your best bet.

Everything you need to know about your AK can be found on this sight here:

I have the side mount and it is rock solid. But here is another alternative that I have found to give you more freedom when it comes to the types of scopes you want. AK Parts - R01AK Scope Mount

I just acquired this mount and it makes boresighting a lot easier as you don't have to shim the rear ring for your scope. I use both options as I keep my red-dot permanently on the UTG sidemount and my hi-power hunting scope on the one seen in the above link. Or use both and put a laser on the opposite mount from your optic mount. Oh the possibilities.

Billy, that looks very nice. Nice set-up. Got a picture of the whole thing?

And bummer for me but I recently found out I have an astigmatism and so then any reddot scope is blurred. I'm going to be going to the eye doctor, it's been since 1989, lol, and I'll probably either go with contacts, verify the astigmatism, and if I'm correct in my assumption of having it, I'll get corrective contacts for it and then I'll also have to get custom shooting glasses with my prescription in them. So FWIW, you're not alone in the eye sight thing there Billy.

I've got the quick-disconnect version of this arriving soon for my AES-10 (pics of that in the link I posted for that thread)! Got it on Gunbroker.
